Quality Built In Ocean City!

Location: 100 West Avenue, Ocean City, NJ

Another Jersey Shore store getting spruced up for the summer season! (Notice the sign about the remodel on the left side of the photo). I wouldn't be surprised is Acme is getting all the acquired A&P stores remodeled by Memorial Day weekend. This store may be having its grand reopening by week's end. I'll keep my eyes pealed for the news.

Quality Built In Wall Township!

Location: 2007 State Route 35, Wall Township, NJ
Opened as Acme on November 6, 2015

An extensive remodel is underway at the Wall Township store, one of A&P's original future stores! It's interesting to see what Acme is doing here considering A&P couldn't be bothered to do much of anything. The store had a very basic "fresh" update with nothing more than a décor swap. The aisle signs didn't even get replaced. Acme, however, is pulling out all the stops to transform this location into a real beauty!

A&P's coffee counter in the front corner has been removed. I belive it was mentioned in a comments section somewhere that a Starbucks is being installed here.

Have to say, I love the color scheme Acme is using in these remodels. The department signs look particularly good with the lights left over from A&P illuminating them from below. Such a huge improvement over the drab look of the A&P. New salad bar and hot foods bar have been installed. The flooring is being replaced in other areas of the store. I suspect it will be replaced here once all the new cases are installed.

BEFORE...

Acme painted over A&P's farm mural that ran along the wall above the Bakery.

And what's this? A room being built in the Produce department. Probably for fresh cut fruits and veggies but I can't say for sure.

Along back of the new Produce room.

Aisle markers running parallel to the aisles just like the A&P signs previously.

Acme is removed the ugly, slotted panels that ran along top of the meat and dairy cases. Perhaps they're putting new one up as all the brackets are still there. You can catch a glimpse of them below...

Old tile meets new.

Acme replaced the center aisle of gondola frozen food cases with upright cases.

New tiling in one of the frozen food aisles.

MORE new cases going in!

"This Is Your ACME" is a great new addition to the remodeled stores! The retro logo wall seems to be getting the ax. We haven't seen it in any recent remodels.

So it looks like Acme is moving the Pharmacy from the entrance side over to this corner from its original spot next to Customer Service...

So my question here is... what sign is under the brown paper? What is Acme putting in this area?

I'm really loving the simplicity of design Acme is using these remodels.

Abandoned Acme — Chalfont/New Britain, PA

Location: 505 West Butler Avenue Chalfont, PA
Opened October 3, 1997
Closed November 13, 2014

Another round of photos has been sent in of the still abandoned New Britain Acme. An auction of the fixtures was held in May, a year and a half after the stores closed! Some observations from our New Britain correspondent...

I drove past the old new Britain acme a few days ago to find the parking lot to be full of vehicles. there was an auction and selling of fixtures inside a few weeks ago. many u-haul vans parked outside but when I was there yesterday there was nobody to be found. the store is literally empty. there are two fairly large dumpsters in the back. the green one seems to have broken and destroyed fixtures and displays, but I was unable to look into the blue one, but you could tell that it was full of stuff.

Abandoned Acme! Shrewsbury, New Jersey

Location: 1080 Broad Street, Shrewsbury, NJ
Opening Date: Sometime in the 70's
Closing Date: April 2016

The Shrewsbury Acme is now abandoned and it doesn't look like Acme is in much of a rush to clear it out. The store has been replaced with a former A&P across the street. It would have been nice if the A&P was remodeled as Shrewsbury wound down for Acme to make the replacement more official. Not only has the store not been remodeled, the Tinton Falls store doesn't appear to be run nearly as well as other Acme conversions. I stopped in while I was in the area and was expecting to find the store in top form to win shoppers over to the *new* Acme. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Far too many poorly stocked shelves throughout the store for a Saturday afternoon. I was particularly surprised by the lack of product in the Bakery, as did two other shoppers I noticed who were shopping for a birthday cake. The store did have a decent crowd and plenty of open checkout lanes. Overall, the place just feels like it is not living up to its potential.

They should have added an arrow pointing to the left. You can't see the new Acme from this area and if you go "directly across the street" you wind up at Trader Joes.

Opened as an Acme on October 16, 2015

Finally... the post that got zapped back on
March 22nd has been recreated!

Acme/Former A&P Park Ridge, NJ
Acme's original location in this area was just down the street in Montvale. Acme and A&P were competitors here dating back to at least 1964. That's the first year A&P shows up in the historic aerial images. Not sure of its exact opening date. The A&P evolved numerous times over the decades but met it's ultimate demise in October 2015 when Acme took it over!

Acme/Former A&P Park Ridge, NJ
Interesting situation here... the Pharmacy is a completely separate store next door and can only be accessed from the front entrance. The two stores are not connected on the inside.

Acme/Former A&P Park Ridge, NJ

One shot of the inside of the Pharmacy. Dan took these pictures back on February 25 so I'm not sure of the state of A&P's Funky Fresh interior décor and layout. The Quality Built remodels are currently being rolled out at a maddening pace.

Heading into the main store...

Acme put in all new lighting in the store prior to reopening. The ceiling was also painted white throughout.

This store has the awful layout that was part of A&P's Funky Fresh remodel. I'm sure on paper it seemed like a cutting edge idea... reconfiguring the store with mini-departments. Problem was shopping in this layout was absolutely awful. This store wasn't broken up with as many mini-departtments as larger stores were.

Here's a look at the same are of thew store prior to Acme reopening.

I believe Acme replaced all the registers here. They look like the ones Acme has been using in recent years although I'm not sure what A&P was using for these remodels.

The former Acme just a stone's throw away!

Location: Location: 20 Kinderkamack Road, Montvale, New Jersey

This classic photo appeared on the blog on March 6, 2015 as a mystery store. I had no idea of the location but it was soon revealed in the comments to be the former store in Montvale. Acme closed here back in the 70's when they shut down a bunch of stores in North Jersey with no warning.

The building has since been expanded and has been divided into smaller stores, including CVS.

Classic Acme "Automatic Drip Coffee" Can!

Quality Built Coming to Edgewater!

Location: 481 River Rd, Edgewater, NJ
Opened as an Acme on October 9, 2015

Every time I have stepped in the store over the past couple of months, I've imagined seeing the walls stripped of it's Pathmark décor and slathered with spackling in preparation for a remodel. My hopes have been even higher lately as Acme is ramping up its remodels. Well, last Thursday evening, I walked in and saw exactly what I have been imagining all this time! Funny thing... I was in a rush and entered through the Pharmacy door which I'm pretty sure I've never done before. This put me over by the first aisle where the first thing I noticed was the paper product image gone from the wall. At first I though it may have fallen off but the I took a quick look around to find ALL the décor removed from every wall!

As of last Thursday, the remodel looks to be just a décor swap. No reset is happening, the floors are not being touched and no new cases. The store was fully remodeled in the mid-2000's so everything is still in decent shape. One thing I'm hoping for is for the ceiling to get painted back to white. Not a fan of the beige treatment that both Pathmark and A&P have done during their 2000's remodels.

This will be the third remodel I've watched this store go through in the past 17 years.

Perfect spot for the retro logo wall! As we've seen, the acquired A&P stores haven't been getting the logo wall. This store does have a ton of wall space to be covered since the Deli and Seafood departments are out on the sales floor.

Returned on Saturday to check the progress
and the Quality Built colors have arrived!

Seafood will have the same blue as the Deli instead of the gray that it is used in the Meat Department.

Just one coat of yellow in Dairy but this area of the store is already looking better!

I'll try not to go overboard with updates on this store but since I'm in here several times a week, I might not be able to help myself.

NEW SIGNAGE
AT MONTCLAIR ACME!

Photos courtesy of Supermarket Fan

Location: Location: 510 Valley Rd, Montclair, NJ

This is how the store looked when Acme first opened here. Tiny ACME sign and A&P's Pharmacy sign was not replaced. All mostly likely due to local ordinances regarding sign sizing and other ridiculous requirements. Supermarket Fan had this to share...

I talked to someone who works nearby the Montclair store and he said that ACME was trying really hard to get a variance since zoning laws have changed since A&P put up its sign. He said they were having a lot of trouble, so that's probably why there was such a delay. (He also said that ACME is much cleaner, fresher, brighter, and cheaper than A&P.)

Supermarket Fan also informs us that no upgrades have been made to the interior at this time. The checkout lights haven't even been replaced.

Updated Pharmacy sign as well!

QUALITY BUILT IN FORT LEE!

Location: 2160 Lemoine Ave, Fort Lee, NJ

Stopped in here a few days ago to grab a couple of items and was surprised to see the Quality décor package! The store looks beautiful. The dingy feeling that was still hanging around a bit from the A&P is completely gone. Like Edgewater, this was mostly just a décor swap. No new cases, no new configurations of departments and no new flooring, which the store COULD really use. New shelving is going into the grocery aisles and a full reset does appear to be underway.

These pictures were taken quickly as I ran through the store. I'll get back for some better coverage once the store is completed.

Fort Lee must sell a ton of fresh flowers. Every single time I've been in this store since last October there has been a floral delivery waiting to be unpacked. When I first photographed the store back in January, I completely skipped Floral because a huge delivery had just arrived and the whole department was a mess.

One note about Produce, which I didn't bother to take a picture of since nothing has changed... Acme is not putting Produce signage in the A&P and Pathmark stores were the produce aisle runs along the first grocery aisle. I thought they would create a hanging version of the "So and So's Freshest Produce Market" but I haven't seen such a sign in any updated store. A sign like they have at the Devon store would be even better for these converted stores. Take a look by clicking here.

Surprised to see the A&P''s spot lights still remaining around the store.

I had wondered too if Acme would do away with the lighting directly above the aisles and install new lighting along the ceiling. No signs of them doing that. There are areas of the store that still feel a little dark.

The Dairy department looks particularly good! A&P's old flooring works well here too.

Health and Beauty was completely being reset when I was here.

The front-end has yet to get some much needed upgrades. Nothing has been done to the Customer Service desk and the store's original registers still remain.

The store has a terrible express lane situation. As you can see here, no express lanes were even open. I really hope new registers are coming yet.

More shelving being delivered outstide!

Ortley Beach sign gets painted!

The massive structure holding Acme's sign high up in the air has been de-rusted and repainted! This contraption has been standing here since Acme first opened on the property in 1969. When Acme closed in the 80's, the neighboring A&P expanded and claimed the giant Acme sign as it's own. Acme triumphantly took it back on November 13. 2015.

A look at the sign prior to the repaint...

In additional photo of the sign had been sent in along with some

So this one comes as a surprise...  a second Acme in Asbury Park! The first being located on the opposite end of town at 22 Main Street. It no longer exists today. That location was covered briefly on the blog back in 2011, which you can jump to by clicking here

There aren't any dates or locations listed for either Asbury Park store on the old directories that I have. The address given above is approximate but will get you there if you follow it.

Acme – Jersey City, New Jersey

Location: 321 Route 440, Jersey City, NJ
Opened as an Acme on November 4, 2015

Today we'll be taking a look at the second Acme in Jersey City. This store was a former Pathmark, in case it's not TOO obvious from the sign. I don't know what Acme was thinking when they put their sign up. Could it look any worse? They should have at least painted the whole thing beige so it wasn't so obvious that the letters aren't centered in Pathmark's frame.

The Pharmacy sign did not get changed out here.

These days, Acme lovers to keep their Floral departments stocked! My local Acme easily offers triple the floral selection than the Pathmark ever did. As you can see, the décor here is from A&P's last remodel package for Pathmark. Interesting that this store was remodeled with the latest look considering it had been remodeled in the mid-2000's with the fancy Go Fresh, Go Local décor.

These photos were taken this past Spring which is why you'll be seeing some Monopoly signage and Easter candy. It's possible Acme may have swapped the décor out here but I doubt it. The other Jersey City location and the Hoboken store still remain untouched.

All the flooring is left over from the mid-2000's remodel. Looks kinda odd with the newer red and white theme. Notice the ceiling drops lower in the section that Pathmark expanded into.

Former home of Customer Service. It was moved to the other side of Floral.

Shrunken aisle signs for this area of the store.

Soda and water seems out of place in the first aisle. I believe it's the only grocery offerings at this end of the store. Household and Health & Beauty take up the rest of the space from here to Produce.

Path to Savings flooring remains in this stockroom!

I'm so glad Acme doesn't put these generic, feel-good words all over the walls. What's the point? First time I've seen these red panels when they were used for a department sign.

I bet ya there isn't a fully intact "very" in any Pathmark that was remodeled with this package. The descender in the "y" just never had a chance.

Very unusual to see a Parhmark with lights installed on the ceiling rather than directly above the aisles, at least in my experiences.

Global Cuisine in the front corner.

The relocated Customer Service desk. This store has a terrible express register situation. These conversions go either of two ways... some get deluxe express register counters while others are left with 2 regular express registers, with only one ever being open. It's a chronic issue at the Edgewater store.

The Parhmark had expanded over into this area but I guess the liquor store gets the outside wall. It is located in the very corner so they don't have much wall space for signage.

Acme shares the shopping center with a Kmart that still in business. Both stores attract a lot of shoppers as neither one has much competition in this part of town. Condo construction is also booming in the already densely populated area.
