DEMOLTION!

Location: 195 N West End Blvd, Quakertown, PA
Opened in 1998
Closed August 23, 2007
72,500-square-foot

Last week, Jason, aka Kapi, left a link to photos he had taken of the Quakertown store getting demolished. At this point, it looks like a majority of the front of the store is being removed with the remainder of the building being left intact. TJMaxx and HomeGoods will be moving in to the former Acme. Jason said he will be taking more pictures so we'll get to see how the conversion plays out. The photo above is how the store looked back in 2009. It remained in that condition until just recently. Below are photos Jason took over 3 different days in March...

The Acme in better days...

Sadly, this store only lasted 9 years despite Acme's presence in Quakertown for decades.

These photos just in of the former Exton Acme. And like Quakertown, the entire store is not getting demolished. Most of the changes are happening to the interior which has been completely gutted. @ has found out that Hobby Lobby will be taking the space.

Great shot of the inside! Not a clue left behind from the Acme.

Produce windows have been sealed over....

Along with the door that lead to the garden shop. This area was left over from Hechinger which was located here before the Acme.

COMING SOON!

A&P fresh closed on November 20, 2015
Opening as Acme in late May/Early June

Acme/Former A&P Boonton, NJ
Acme made it official on November 19th that it was acquiring the Boonton A&P, just a day before the store closed. Unlike the rest of the A&P fleet that Acme purchased, this store was not in for a quick conversion. Still has another 2 months before it opens. No confirmation yet but I assume the interior is being remodeled to the Quality Built décor package. What else could be taking so long?

Signature Brands have officially arrived!

Yesterday, Alberstons made an official announcement that its new Signature brands are being rolled out to all of its 2,286 stores. Store signage featuring the new brands has been going into Acme stores for the past couple of weeks. The Signature brands, which are Safeway's rebranded private label products, have been arriving on shelves for months now. Supervalu's Essential Everyday products have been fading away, at a painfully slow pace, for just as long. The day I don't see any Essential Everyday products on Acme's shelves can't come soon enough! The display show here, with brochures are available for shoppers to take with them, arrived at the Weehawken store this past weekend. You can read details of Alberston's announcement at SupermarketNews.com by clicking here.

A closer look at the brochure...

A Return to the Former Milford Acme!

Today we're taking a quick return to the former pitched-roof Acme in Milford, Delaware. The store has been covered on the blog previously thanks to Ben from Delaware. This time around we're getting a look at the back room area which is now being utilized as sales floor space.

Interior photos courtesy of Will aka B-More Retial on flickr

The interior has remains mostly untouched from it's Acme days except for some fresh paint. This store is nearly identical to the abandoned Parkesburg store.

Classic Acme air vents along the former Produce wall. Notice the clock just about that shopper's left shoulder! We've seen it at several locations including the abandoned flat-rrofed store in Woodstown, New Jersey. Click here for a closer look.

Update: Will just sent in an extreme close-up of the clock!

In this shot, Will was standing just behind the Deli facing what would have been the Meat room. The spot lights that illuminated the meat cases can still be seen running along the drop ceiling along the left side of the photo. Notice the stairs in the distance that lead up to the second floor, which may have been replaced since the Acme left.

Looking toward the corner Deli and back room space.

Not sure what were looking at here. The brick walled room in the back there may have been the trash room.

Stairs to the second floor! I believe Acme's stairs were located along the rear wall so these may have been added after Acme left. The break room, bathrooms and compressor room were located up there.

Thanks to Will for the pictures of the former Milford Acme!

Signature Select Branded Baked Goods!

WHAT'S OLD IS NEW AGAIN!

The original Chocolate Chip Cookies bag is back! This time around the Acme logo has been replaced with the new Signature Select logo. SuperValu had gotten rid of these colorful packages years ago in favor of the plain white ones you see in front. These cookies are big business at Acme. They're prominently featured in the Bakery and regularly shown in the weekly circular, often on sale. Not sure if the other banners put as much emphasis on these goodies. I imagine the new/old bags will be coming for the other varieties soon.

LONG OVERDUE
MUFFIN BOX UPDATE!

And... the New Signature Select logo has also been added to the muffins boxes. The old Albertsons box, which has been inexplicably kicking around for years now, is shown on the right. The day I no longer see that logo/leaf in Acme cannot come soon enough.

P.S.: These photos were taken at the Edgewater Acme this past Saturday morning. As I've mentioned before, I've been a pretty regular shopper at the store since the late 90's. In the last few years, I've watched the business plummet. You could literally hear a pin drop at 11:00 on Saturday morning. They would usually have two full service registers open along with the four self-checkouts. Rarely any lines. Now I walk in and see more shoppers in the Produce department than I would see in the entire Pathmark! Acme has been running nine to ten registers on Saturday mornings with customers checking out at every lane. There's a ton of competition in this area that really seemed to decimate the business at Pathmark including Target, just across the parking lot, Trader Joes and Whole Foods just up the street. From what I've observed at this store in the past few months, I would venture to say that Acme is doing twice the volume Pathmark did in its final years. It's really nice stepping into the store now and feeling like it's alive rather than gasping for its final breath!

Remodel Underway at Kenilworth Acme!

Acme/Former A&P Kenilworth, NJ

Location: 801 Kenilworth Blvd, Kenilworth, NJ

A remodel is underway at the Kenilworth Acme! At this point not much has been done other than removing A&P's department signage. Hard to know how much a remodel this will turn out to be. I imagine it's largely just a décor swap. Really hoping they go with the Quality Built package and inject some Acme personality into the place. The painfully generic 3rd version of the Premium Fresh and Healthy package need to be put out of its misery.

I like how Acme used A&P's floor pattern to dictate the layout of the produce cases. A&P took a more random approach.

I'm assuming these are new cases for the fresh fruit.

You can hop over to Dan's flickr collection for tour of this store by clicking here.

Thanks to Dan for alerting us to the remodel at Kenilworth!

Tukerton Acme Grand Reopening!

Just discovered on Acme's twitter feed that the Tuckerton Acme held its grand reopening last Friday. Can't find any pictures online of the interior but I suspect that Industrial Circus décor package remains intact. According to the graphic below, which Acme had on its website, upgrades occurred in several areas of the store including the Bakery, Deli and Pharmacy. Improvements were made to Customer Service and the bathrooms as well.  As you can see above, the Sav-on sign has been removed.

News Break:
SAVE-A-LOT TO CARRY A&P's
AMERICA'S CHOICE BRAND!

This is actually breaking news fto me. I had no idea Save-A-Lot had acquired the America's Choice brand.  I don't think many of you knew either since the news never came in to any of the comment sections on the blog. The news barely makes the headline on a SupermarketNews.com's article on some major changes underway at Save-A-Lot. An excerpt is just below...

As noted above the introduction of national brand items will accompany what Claus called a "major private brand revamp" to be executed over three phases in the next 18 months. The plan calls in part for introducing a single brand to span over multiple categories — America's Choice, the former A&P private brand that he said Save-A-Lot has acquired. "It's a fabulous name," Claus said. "Our goal will be to create greater brand recognition and loyalty with a single name across much of the store as opposed to individual brand names across categories.

Location: 6212 Landis Ave, Sea Isle City, NJ

Acme is in a race against time to get the new Sea Isle City store open by Memorial Day Weekend. The Sea Isle City Guide reports that construction has been going on around the clock to make the deadline. Rapid progress is also underway to the interior. The registers were installed about two weeks ago. We can see in the photo above that the exterior is looking great! Way more personality here than the bland facade at the new Beach Haven store. Acme Style will bringing you a full tour of the new store once it opens. For additional details on the construction progress and photos of the new store, check out the Sea Isle City Guide by clicking here

BROOMALL ACME!
Location: 1991 N Sproul Rd, Broomall, PA
Grand Reopening: May 5, 2016

I photographed this store years ago for the blog. The interior pictures turned out horribly so I never posted them. As you can see below, they ditched the Sav-on sign AND centered the ACME sign! The interior previously had the Abertsons Marketplace remodel and has been remodeled with the Quality Built décor. Check out this article on Delaware County Times for additional photos and information.

Supermarket Fan: Is there a retro logo wall in this store?

Acme Market, Kenilworth, NJ

Acme Market, Kenilworth, NJ
Over the years, I've often complained about Acme's lack of custom designed register lights and its dreadfully boring block-letter logo. Well no more! I still can't believe how far Acme has come since this blog launched in 2009.

BEFORE...

The photo above was taken at the 10th and Reed store in Philadelphia shortly after its remodel in 2014. It's safe to say this logo blew a lot of our minds with how awesome it was! An extremely successful update to Acme's dreadfully dull block-letter logo, accomplished with a nod to Acme's logos of the past. The original version has been used in remodels over the past few years and appears in Acme's newest location in Barnegat, New Jersey.

AFTER...

This photo, courtesy of Supermarket Fan, shows the updated logo in the newly remodeled Kenilworth store. This new design first began to appear on the register lights which were being installed in former A&P and Pathmark stores. I noticed the logo was looking a little different but hadn't taken the time to verify it until this past weekend. When I saw Supermarket Fan's photos of the Kenilworth store, I new for sure the logo had been changed.

BEFORE...

Register lights at the 10th and Reed store.

AFTER...

Updated register lights at the Edgewater location.

I'm a little sad to see the first version getting retired already. In my mind, that new logo marked a major turning point in Acme's history. The slow, painful slide to obscurity finally over with new owners taking aggressive measures to improver stores and to secure a prosperous future for Acme. That said, the updated version is slightly bolder and a bit more sophisticated, while still giving a nod to the past with a less retro feel. Which one do you prefer?

DEMOLTION!

Photos courtesy of Ian Anderson

Location: 545 West Trenton Avenue, Morrisville, PA
Opened in 1995
Closed November 2012

We knew this day was coming. The former 90's Morrisville Acme is finally coming down to make way for redevelopment of the site. Wawa had been planning to build a store here but has since pulled out. Three buildings, including a Rite Aid, will be constructed in place of the Acme. You can view the plans for the site by clicking here.

The Morrisville Acme had a one-of-a-kind facade design.

The interior has been cleared out already so there isn't any signs of Acme to be seen inside...

Nothin' but a huge mess in there!

UPDATE TO MORRISVILLE'S
FORMER ACME

Location: 1 E Trenton Ave, Morrisville, PA
Opened in August 1967
Closed in 1995

Ian also sent in updated photos for the former pitched-roof store which was replaced by the 90's model.

The old Acme sign is still up inside! No longer illuminated, unfortunately. Looks like the updated to the facade is keeping exterior light from lighting up the colorful tiles. Below is a shot of how the  sign looked previously...

Acme – Pleasant Valley, New York

Location: 13 North Avenue, Pleasant Valley,  NY

Today we have some pictures of the Pleasant Valley Acme in New York, sent in by an annonymous contributor along with other New York locations which will be coming to the blog soon. Crowds look light at  this time of day but according to the aerial views, this is a high volume store. The logo on front is a little odd. It looks to be solid red with no white outlines. Certainly a very unique exterior for an A&P and an Acme!

Round 1 of the "fresh" remodel inside.

This store did get an Acme sign from the front-end. Stores that didn't get one of these signs during the conversions STILL don't have one. At least the ones I've been in. Seems like Acme just gave up getting more of these made.

AERIAL VIEWS

Now that's a hopin' parking lot!

Looks like a former Grand Union across the street. Judging from the awning and the windows along the front, it was remodeled in the 80's. Interestingly, the other stores in the shopping center appear to have the same facade as Grand Union would have had prior to the 80's remodel. Click here for a look at a former Grand Union that still has its original facade.

Quality Built In Wildwood and North Cape May!

When I posted the news of South Wildwood's grand reopening, I wasn't sure if they had changed out the décor, especially considering it was a relatively new store. Well it turns out they did! Gotta say, the NJ stores are getting more love than the store's in Acme's core market of Philly. Several "remodeled" stores in that area were left with their previous décor packages.
