Brand New Acme – Sea Isle City, New Jersey

It's finally here! The tour of the brand-new Sea Isle City store!! Photos have been kindly sent in by two of our regular contributors. Sent in the very same week no less! Both report the store was insanely busy on their visits with the parking lot being an absolute nightmare.

Photos courtesy of dougbalt (unless noted otherwise)

The exterior of the store is very similar to the replacement store in Beach Haven.

Beach supply cage to the right on the entrance.

I'll take some! Haven't been to this part of the shore since I was a kid.

You'll have better luck riding your bike here than driving.

Elevated entrance like in Beach Haven. The whole store is elevated to avoid flooding when the sea rolls over this part of the island.

The "ACME" on the cart handles is apparently very easy to scratch off. I just noticed today that half the carts at my local Acme no longer have the logo.

While this place is around 3 times larger than the store it replaced, it's still relatively small.

Corner Deli sign is squeezed in back here. Bumps right up to the Bakery wall. Snazzy flat screens along the back wall!

Polished concrete floors throughout.

Very small Bakery tucked in the corner. Have to say... I HATE Acme's roll and bagel bins. So unappealing. They've been around for years and I'm really surprised they haven't switched to more appetizing display cases for these new stores.

The Meat Department wall is brown here instead the gray color we've been seeing in the converted stores.

The last aisle is CLASSIC Acme. Frozen and Dairy with a tiny Customer Service counter in the front corner. The store has a decent width to fit 14 aisles but, as Doug noted, the aisles are pretty short.

Super modern bathrooms in the front corner!

I think my 50's Acme had a bigger Customer Service desk!

The registers are angled. A total of only seven must make for some long lines, especially on the weekends.

Two express registers at this end.

A couple shots from around back...

And here we see Doug trying to navigate the jam packed parking lot!

Thanks to both Doug and Michael for bringing us a tour of the Sea Isle City store!!

So far it's looking like more of a décor swap than a remodel but I'll be keeping my eye on the place to see what unfolds.

Reset Underway at Edgewater Acme!

Location: 481 River Rd, Edgewater, NJ

This week flew by before I was able to get any more posts done so I'm throwing up this quickie for today. When I was in the Edgewater Acme last weekend, I saw the sign above just as I was entering the store. Seemed strange that they were starting a reset weeks after the décor swap was completed.  Why wouldn't they have just done everything at once? Anyway, I was eager to check out what changes were underway but there wasn't much to see at that point. Ever since Acme took over this store, I have been wondering if they would do away with the double wide aisle 15. Pathmark made this change just a few years back when the Bank of America branch closed. They expanded grocery into the area that housed the bank branch and turned aisle 15 into seasonal and deals. I was sure the aisle's days were numbered the minute Acme took over. Seemed like so much wasted space. Sure enough, Acme is adding shelves down the middle and returning the aisle to its original state. The store will soon have a total of 21 aisles! Again, it's weird they didn't do this while they were doing the décor swap. Now they have to reconfigure the signs for aisles 15 to 21.

I'm looking forward to checking out the added selection  of this already awesome Acme once the reset is done. I'll be adding an update to this post once the reset is complete.

Update 8.22.16: Turns out... a MASSIVE reset is underway at this store. The place is a mess. All new shelving is going in. The health food department is getting all black shelving, along with the aisle end caps. They're not posting any signs as to where things are getting moved to, so shoppers are having to search up and down the aisles. Many aisles are just empty as inventory is quite low throughout the store. Looks more like the place is going out of business than a reset!

Acme Markets Returning Soon to Salisbury!

Location: 751 S Salisbury Blvd, Salisbury, MD

Acme snapped up this store when Giant was forced to sell it due to the merger of Ahold and Delhaize. Giant's loss is Acme's gain! This is a very high-volume store and will mark Acme's triumphant return to Salisbury after a 16 year absence.

Acme is taking more time converting this location than it did with the former A&P and Pathmark stores. Seven days should allow enough time for a décor swap, at the very least. Our Acme Style contributor will be getting more pictures for us once the store opens.

Streetview from Google maps. Head just a bit further down the road and you see the store with the old Giant sign...

Limited satellite imagery for this area. Must be an early morning picutre too with the parking lot being so empty.

Early Version of the
Checkerboard Arch Décor
Alive and Well Today!

Location: Hannaford, 7 Medway Rd, Milford, MA

A hot tip came into Acme Style from James about some pictures seen over on yelp for the Hannaford store in Milford. The store has an early version of the Checkerboard Arch décor, minus the checkerboards. It must have started it's life as a Star Market or Shaws. The builing is nearly identical, both inside and out, to Acme's 90's models. I'm not sure if any Shaws were built with this model but I do know some Star Market stores were. Acme never used the Checkerboard Arch décor in any of their new stores. It was used only for remodels.

Unlike the Checkerboard Arch décor that we're familiar with, this package uses a variety of fonts for the department signage.

This flooring never officially made it's way into Acme. Remodeled stores kept their 80's checkerboard flooring which was still relatively new when this décor package was rolled out. The only Acme I know of that had this flooring was the old Beach Haven store.

Additional photos are available on the yelp review for this store. To view them, please click here.

A satellite view of the exterior which clearly shows the similarities to Acme's 90's stores. The store is set back too far from the main road to catch any good views from google street view.

Acme – Rehoboth, Delaware

Pictures of the Rehoboth Acme, a former SuperFresh, came in from two different contributors over the past week. Both Justin and Marv gave the store rave reviews. The Quality Built décor arrived here about two months ago.

This is the first time I've seen this O Organics signage in the windows. Acme is pushing their private label products more than ever before. It's interesting how grocers are transforming their own products from just being a cheaper alternative to national brands into a reason to shop at their stores specifically for these products. Acme has been heavily promoting their Signature Style ice cream and Italian sparkling water, among others. Signage, displays, extremely low sale prices and store announcements all helping to bring attention to Acme new private labels.

"Beach" has lost its "a". Will it ever be replaced?

A shore mural greeting shoppers on their way in. Similar to the one at the Manasquan store.

Acme kept A&P's lighting fixtures above the Floral Department. Some stores hang plants from these structures. It doesn't look like Floral got a new coat of paint. You can check out pictures of this store previous to the décor swap by clicking here.

A&P's flooring remains throughout.

Slim pickins of cakes which seems to be a problem with Acme lately. Interesting since their commercials often feature their cake selection.

In many stores, Acme is installing black shelving for the seasonal aisles and the health food aisles.

Major upgrades in the restrooms.

Now you see it...

Now you don't. It's too bad the logo is so easily scraped off the cart handles.

The following pictures are from the Pike Creek Acme's yelp page...

Deluxe remodel here! The store previously had the first, deluxe round of the Premium Fresh and Healthy package. The store now has the Quality Built décor and had its grand reopening last Friday. The exterior of the store didn't get any much needed love. It still has the same look seen in the first photo of this post.

I believe the faux hardwood floors are brand new.

Corner Deli is cream here instead of blue.

The store may have been significantly reconfigured during this remodel. People are complaining online that the aisles are much more narrow.

Some "before" photos...

Jenkintown is the only other store I've seen that with this curved ceiling above the front-end. You can check it out here.

Thanks Sarah L and others for posting these great photos on yelp!

First Look at the New Salisbury Acme!

Opening date: Friday September 9, 2016

 Some observations from Marv...

Acme spent some serious money installing all new equipment in the service departments (meat, deli, bakery, seafood). New lighting was installed in the produce department and in the back half of the store near the service departments. Seafood was expanded and all the existing fixtures were cleaned and replaced where needed. The organic section Giant had in the front corner was kept and is fully stocked with O organics and other national brands. They brought the build your own six pack of beer feature in as well.

I'm a little confused by the aisle sign here. Looks like it's aisle 1 but I would think Dairy is on the opposite side of the store. Of course I've never been here so I have no idea what the layout is like beside what we can see in these photos.

Cheap eggs!

The self checkouts survived! Strange considering it looks as though all the other register stands were replaced along the front-end. Is Acme pulling back on pulling out self-checkouts? The image above was taken from a report done WMDT. To watch the full video, click here

Dan has let us know this spot is the future home of a Starbucks!

Huge new salad and soup bar!

Not sure if Acme replaced the tile on the Deli walls or if is left over from A&P. It doesn't look like this store had the full "fresh" remodel in it's A&P days. The flooring has been replaced in this area of the store. Most likely the entire perimeter.

Now THAT'S a sample station! Grab a roll from the Bakery and lunch is served!

Brand-new-never-seen-before black Acme shopping carts!

Another beautiful new Acme for New Jersey! I hope to be getting here in the next week or two to see it for myself.

No More Slideshow!

The slideshow that has been seen in the upper right-hand corner of the blog will be seen no more. All thanks to Google. They sent word that the coding for the slideshows was outdated and could no longer be maintained. I find that terribly hard to believe. But then again, they are working overtime to keep Blogger photo management as confusing and unorganized as possible. The slideshow may return if I can find a suitable third-party service that will work well with Acme Style's format.

St. Michaels Remodel Disaster!

Location: 114 S Talbot St, St Michaels, MD

Last Fall, Acme announced a list of stores that were scheduled for remodeling. Included on the list were two classic stores... St. Michaels and Clayton. Not sure whatever happened with the Clayton store but today we're getting a look at St. Michaels. For some absurd reason, Acme chose the "paint and plastic" Premium Fresh & Healthy version 3.0 for this remodel. The absolute last store in the entire chain deserving of such a cold and generic décor package. The store would have been better off keeping its previous package, the locally flavored Neighborhood Market scheme. At least they did leave the cursive logo along the back although it doesn't quite fit with the rest of the new look. Will reports that new cases have been put in and judging from this picture new flooring may have been put in as well. It's really unfortunately that they didn't put Quality Built in here. Would have been a perfect fit for this tiny, classic Acme Market.

The Return of America's Choice!

In Name Only...

Sav-a-lot has debuted the completely overhauled product line acquired from A&P back in April. Turns out all they took in the deal was the name. Absolutely everything else has changed... the logo, packaging AND the food. As of now, Sav-a-lot is using this new brand for their line of indulgent prepared/ready-to-serve foods. They've added "Creations" to the name for this particular category. Sav-a-lot plans to roll the name out to other food categories in their stores as they move to having one name for all of their private labeled products. Certainly looks as though the America's Choice we knew at A&P is officially dead and gone.

A&P's FUTURESTORE FACADE
IS A GONER!

Acme/Former A&P Ortley Beach, NJ

Location: Location: 5 Ortley Plaza, Ortley Beach, NJ

Just in from Dougbalt...
There's a remodel underway at the Ortley Beach location. They're ripping out the front, futuristic, slanted windows as well as the cashier area underneath and are doing something new. I can't tell yet what will become of it.

Turns out, he can...
Mystery solved: I asked an employee. She said they're installing a similar facade to the ones in Sea Isle and LBI.

Quality Built In Denville!

Location: 123 East Main Street, Denville, NJ

Acme opened in A&P's very first "fresh" store on October 25, 2015. This store was built back in 2004 on the site of a former Centennial A&P which had been expanded and rebranded as a Sav-a-center.

This may be one store where A&P's décor looked a little better than Acme's Quality Built. Lack of wall space above many of the service departments forced the Quality Built signage to be scaled down.  You can compare some before and afters below....

Acme/Former A&P Denville, NJ

The Cheese Shop definitely looked better before. Acme replaced this signage with... nothing.

Look closely and you can see the Seafood Department doesn't have the usual frame around the sign. Denville is also a short on the classic black and white photos that are mounted to the walls throughout most stores.

Extensive Remodel Underway at Lincroft!

Photos courtesy of Dan Asnis

Location: 616 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, NJ

Lincroft is undergoing its very first remodel since opening in 1999! While the store has had a handful of upgrades over the years, with a good amount of the original décor already stripped away, an official full-remodel has not happened. I was surprised the Quality Built décor didn't go in when the lighting was swapped out around the store last winter. (Coverage of the lighting swap can be viewed here). It would have been an easy thing to do since most of what neede to happen was fresh paint on the walls and new depatment signage. As we can see now, Acme was cooking up some bigger plans for this store.

Cake cases moved to the very front of Bakery. These used to be located around the corner with fresh bread racks located in this spot.

One thing that won't be missed in this store, is Acme's worst-ever Bakery sign. Still a mystery how things went so terribly wrong here. The sooner this sign winds up in the dumpster, the better!

Produce will be getting new flooring. Some other areas of the store will be getting new flooring as well but I doubt the whole store will be done. Time will tell.

New deluxe Salad Bar! Its original home is getting brand-new upright cases...

Funny how they're leaving the old signs up while they paint the walls. They're not long for this world. I imagine the produce cases will soon be painted black.

Self-checkouts finally gone! Additional express checkouts have been installed at the other end as well...

Looks like the greeting cards have been moved out of this corner. It was rather congested with the cards crammed into Floral.

SuperValu's PF&H aisle markers soon headed for the trash along with the approximately 10,000 category markers up and down every aisle...

Truth be told, they went a little overboard with all of these signs.

Full coverage of Lincroft will be coming to Acme Style once the remodel is complete! Click here for addtional coverage of this store.
