The Catonsville Acme was located on the far end of the Ingleside Shopping Center with Giant Food at the other end. Safeway now stands in the spot of the former Acme.

A present day look at the Ingleside Shopping Center. Giant Food is now a Rite Aid. Looks as though that building remained mostly intact over the years. The Acme was swallowed up by the Safeway.

Kmart – West Long Branch, New Jersey

News Break:

Location: 108 Monmouth Rd, West Long Branch, NJ

Check this out... a Kmart that isn't closing! I've driven by this place a million times but never stopped in to take a look. One evening this past summer, I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on Route 36 and decided to pull in the entrance and have a look Turned out to be one of the most bizarre shopping experiences I've ever had. The store was completely dead. I was just about the only person in the whole place. No shoppers and no employees. Judging from satellite images, the store still seems to attract a decent amount of customers. Perhaps they come on the weekends.

Big Kmart sign looking pretty weathered these days.

The store is big and bright. Surprisingly clean and well stocked from one end to the other. That's not to say it doesn't feel painfully outdated.

One of the things that drives me crazy about Kmart these days, is the complete lack of consistency with their store signage. Here we have a mix of the orange and brown signage with newer signage in the clothing departments with some completely random signs in other areas.

Books! Tons of seasonal merchandise remaining on shelves in late August. For a company that isn't doing well, they are pouring money into inventory that is not moving off of shelves.

The garden department straight ahead.

Looking along the back of the store. Gotta give this place crops for not having a single burned out light bulb!

Literally not one single shopper along the entire rear of the store. Can't remember the last thing I was in a store this huge without another human being in site.

Always fun to check out Kmart's mishmash floors. So common in Kmarts for the original tile patterns  to no longer make any sense with their current layouts.

Hello? Anyone here?

Fitting Room signage remains from the early 90's remodel.

Not all the signage got updated in clothing.

Former spot of the kcafé. Not sure if the café was added in the early 90's or during the the Big Kmart conversion.

Enticing mattress department.

Another odd-ball sign for Home Furnishings. Looks like the amount of registers were reduced to make space for this department.

The front-end looks pretty good! And there's a shopper!!

It appears there is a single line for the checkouts. The only explanation I could fine for the wall of snack cakes. I left without buying anything. Would have left a lot sooner if I wasn't taking pictures of the joint.

The Big Kmart era Customer Service desk with the accompanying giant monitor long gone.

Like with any Kmart these days, you have to wonder.... how much longer before the "Store Closing" signs go up?

Massive parking lot.

Found this area to be very curious. Clearly a former grocery store, looking like a smaller version of some Acmes we've seen paired up with Kmart. Did a little digging on flickr for more information and discovered this from catnapped retail central...
"...found that this originated as an A&P WEO location. Spent some time as a garden supply store then as a grocery chain called Rex-Gene from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. The chain's locations were acquired by NY-based Western Beef but apparently this location was never reopened."

Auto Service long gone.

Deluxe Garden Center to the rear with an unaltered 90's Kmart sign to boot!

Acme – Midland Park, New Jersey

Location: 136 Lake St, Midland Park, NJ

The stunningly beautiful Midland Park A&P was built sometime in the mid to late 90's. The store replaced a smaller location on Goodwin Avenue. The exterior design was "one and done" for A&P which is unfortunate considering how unique it is. The store was remodeled to an A&P fresh in the 2000's with the second version of the "fresh" décor. Acme opened here on October 14, 2015.

Tiny sign is due to local ordinances. A&P's sign was small as well, which you can see here

Covered walkway similar to the one at the Woodcliff Lake store. Even more helpful here as this is a second parking lot behind where I'm standing.

The columns along the front were a common element for A&Ps built in the 90's. Nothing else about the exterior design was. Several of the windows along the front allow natural light to flow into the store...

I would image Acme isn't in a big hurry to update the décor here as A&P left the store in pristine condition. It's one of the nicest "fresh" remodels I've seen.

Pharmacy is to the left of the entrance and faces the café which you can see by clicking here. (I didn't get a picture of it!)

All new lighting in Produce thanks to Acme! The store is absolutely beautiful inside and out. After being to a bunch of Acmes on this road trip that had very few customers, I was really hoping to see some good crowds at this location. There wasn't.

The Cheese Shop sign is the one element brought over from the first round of the "fresh" remodels. Funny how A&P decided that the Cheese Shop needed a title while all the other food department merely have product murals.

Liquor and Wine is now a huge organic and health food department. For a photo of the previous department and article on the loss of the liquor license, please click here.

In my opinion, the second version of A&P's fresh remodels is among the nicest décor packages ever to be seen in a supermarket. A&P executed it flawlessly for their Midland Park store!

Huge Bakery!

Mix and match freezers.

Dramatic Frozen Food alcove!

The Pharmacy and Customer Service departments here are in opposite spots compared to most of A&P's layouts for their 90's stores.

Crickets along the front-end on a Saturday afternoon. These photos were take a while ago. Hope Acme's "New Lower Prices" campaign is helping to increase business. The prices overall have improved significantly.

Location: 80 Godwin Avenue, Midland Park, NJ

The former A&P is now a Sears Hardware. The store was expanded after A&P left.

Two parking lots! Looks like they were necessary in A&P's early days at this location. Not so much anymore.

The unique exterior design is carried through all four sides of the building.

The original A&P stayed relatively small to the bitter end. Further expansion would have killed off far too much parking.

News Break:
LIDL PROBLEMS

Turns out Lidl isn't proving to be the runway success so many had predicted. Market share has fallen since the first stores opened in June and the company is attempting to regroup before opening more stores. I was always confused by all the predictions of Lidl annihilating traditional grocers on the East Coast, even from comments on this blog. Less than two years ago, Tesco's Fresh and Easy failed miserably on the West Coast after numerous reboots. Add to that Bottom Dollar's bust of an attempt to rule the Philadelphia market. Where are they both now? Dead and gone. While things aren't looking so dire for Lidl just yet, early sales results show they're not the traditional supermarket killer everyone was expecting.

Acme – South Plainfield, New Jersey

Location: 907 Oak Tree Road, South Plainfield, NJ

Wow. This is a beautiful Acme. Ranks up there with the nicest in the whole chain. Big and clean with every single aisle stocked perfectly. Even all of the displays are neat, tidy and carefully placed around the store. Acme scored some good bones with this one and elevated it even highly with the Quality Built décor.

Super A&P  Food Market opened here in the late 90's, replacing a former Futurestore model across the street. Unfortunately for Acme, ShopRite opened in A&P's old spot in November 2016 after expanding and extensively renovating the building.

I arrived here about 6:00 on a week night. Looked like there was a decent amount of cars in the parking lot but the store was completely dead inside. And the few shoppers that were wondering around were only grabbing a couple of items.

Guess what? This place has SELF-CHECKOUTS!!!

Quality Built looking fantastic here! Works very well with A&P's old black and white floors.

BEFORE >>>

Before photos courtesy of Mike B.

There will be a mix of "before" pictures throughout the post thanks to Mike. He took some photos while A&P was winding down and some others after Acme reopened the store.

Maybe I was just here on an off-hour. The store was stocked full of merchandise so it must be doing decent business. Or is it? Maybe it gets really busy on the weekends.

Pharmacy and Customer Service just to the right of the entrance. Health and Beauty is directly across from the Pharmacy with all merchandise on shelves half as high as the rest of the store.

Doesn't look like the pizza oven is used any more. Much of the Food To Go cases to the left were covered with displays of chips. The selection of fresh foods over at ShopRite is very extensive. Acme isn't even trying to compete with it.

BEFORE >>>

The A&P had a late stage "fresh" remodel with simplified murals from the second round and department lettering from the first round. Basically just a décor swap.

BEFORE >>>

BEFORE >>>

The produce was beautiful. Is anyone going to come and buy any of it?

BEFORE >>>

Not many shoppers here on Mike's visit either although it was certainly off-hours as the Seafood Department was closed.

No customers. No employees. And it was 6:00 p.m. Not 10:00 p.m.

Love the fact that this store has a bright white ceiling. Makes all the difference with the lighting. A&P painted the ceilings beige for the most of the "fresh" remodels. Wasn't a good idea. This store feels nearly brand-new despite being around 20 years old.

BEFORE >>>

BEFORE >>>

Absolute crickets from one end of this place the other.

The only shoppers I saw in the entire store with a cart somewhat full of groceries.

Love seeing the new Acme logo on a pure white wall!

A&P had their self-checkouts up at this end. Acme removed them and added in an express register counter. (See below) That is all gone now too. Regular express registers are now at the opposite end next to the newly installed self-checkouts.

BEFORE >>>

Crazy that A&P put in the "fresh" décor and left the tacky 90's register lights!

This store received all new registers along the front-end.

And here are the self-checkouts! Want to know the funny part? The few shoppers that were checking out were doing it at one of the two manned registers! The other register had no customers.

Will this place survive against ShopRite? Doesn't look like it to me but it is hard to judge from one visit. If it wasn't such a trek for me, I'd check it out over a weekend to see if the place does any better.

A cool A&P remnant around back!

AND NOW OVER TO THE SHOPRITE...

Location: 3600 Park Ave, South Plainfield, NJ

So I stopped here before going to the Acme. One look at the parking lot and I thought "oh wow, bet there's no one at the Acme". I was right.

I was surprised to see this place with such an old décor package. While it's not terrible, it does feel a little dated. The murals up on the walls have been added to other Saker ShopRites in recent years to add more visual appeal.

Impressive fresh food options for a ShopRite.

Funny thing here... the ShopRite had exactly the same amount of customers in the Bakery as the Acme... zero. I was expecting to see a much bigger crowd here after seeing how full the parking lot was. The place is huge. Nearly 80,0000 square feet.

The A&P finished out it's run with the latest exterior signage.

I'm so confused by this. Apparenlty A&P reopened their abandoned store as a Pathmark Sav-a-center.  It didn't last very long. But how is it that the would be allowed to open another company owned store right across the street? The FTC always makes these chains sell off stores when there is overlap after an acquisition.

Coming Soon – Lawrenceville's New Look!

Location: 2497 Brunswick Avenue/Route 1, Lawrenceville, NJ

We heard a while back that the Lawrenceville Shopping Center would be getting a major exterior renovation. The new owners of the shopping center have finally revealed their plans and as you can see above, the Acme will be completely transformed! Isn't it crazy how similar it will look to the old-school 50's stores...

Classic Brick Acme– photo courtesy of Patrick Richardson

The rendering appears to indicate that Acme's entrance and exit, which are currently in the center of the building, will be relocated to the right side. Hard to know for sure if that's the official plan or if the rendering is just taking some creative license. Judging from the site map included in the brochure for the project, Acme will not be expanding into one or both of the empty storefronts on the left side. We'll have to wait and see if Acme will be doing a more extensive remodel to the interior as the exterior gets significantly improved. The store did receive the Premium Fresh & Healthy décor package back in early 2016. You can check out the current interior by clicking here. For more renderings of the upgraded shopping center, please click here.

Thanks to Paul Richardson for the update on the upcoming makeover!

Acme President's Role Expanding!

News Break:
JIM PERKINS NAMED PRESIDENT
OF SAFWAY'S EASTERN DIVISION!

No need to panic, he will continue to be President of Acme Markets as well. Let's just hope he doesn't get spread to thin. While there have been numerous improvements at Acme since Perkins returned in June, I'm personally not convinced that the acquired A&P stores are living up to their potential. At least the ones I have been visiting for the blog. An article at Supermarket News goes into a little more detail regarding this subject...

Perkins, who had returned to Acme as its president in June — he previously served in that role from 2012-2015 — had been overseeing the integration of the 76 stores that Albertsons acquired from A&P through bankruptcy.

Those acquired stores had deteriorated significantly during the A&P bankruptcy, Flickinger said, but most have seen strong improvements under the leadership of Perkins and his team, according to Flickinger.

“Overall they have done very well with the A&P conversions, particularly given the distressed state of the stores, the inventory, the deferred cap-ex and the absolute chaos that was caused [during the bankruptcy],” he said, noting that “a pocket” of the acquired locations are still “challenging".

Burt Flickinger is the managing director of Strategic Resource Group, New York. So it's good to hear an outside source saying that Acme is doing better with their acquired stores. Interested to know exactly where the "pocket" of challenging stores is.

Former Grand Union – Lake Hiawatha, NJ

News Break:

Location: 435 North Beverwyck Road, Lake Hiawatha, NJ

Exterior photos are courtesy of Google maps street view. Interior are courtesy of unknown at this time. I downloaded these a while back from a link that was sent in but I unfortunately deleted the email somewhere along the way. If these are your photos, please hit me up and I will credit them as you wish! A few more former Grand Unions will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Super Foodtown has made minimal changes to the interior after Grand Union left the building. Their late 90's remodel is alive and well here. I've never been to this store so the photos below might not all be in the correct order. Unsure of what department is to the right just above. Bakery, Produce and Deli are just beyond the dramatic archway.

Unlike Grand Union's cookie-cutter 80's remodel, many elements of thethe late 90's décor packages varied from store to store.

I believe this area of the Produce Department is to the left of the Bakery but I'm not entirely sure.

The Pharmacy sign appears to have been updated since the GU days.

Frozen Food is in the last aisle just like we saw at the Waldwick Stop&Shop. Dairy is in the second to last aisle which was pretty standard for Grand Unions particularly after the 80's remodel.

This store did not receive the ultra-deluxe/totally retro register lights that were common for this remodel. I unfortunately do not have a photo of them on the blog.

For a look at a more deluxe Grand Union with the same décor package, jump over to the East Rutherford post and scroll down below the Acme pictures.

Acme/ Rite Aid - Lake Hiawatha, NJ

Now I remember why I had been holding on to the Grand Union photos for so long. I was planing on getting out this way to photograph the former Acme to include in this post. Completely forgot it was there. Got an email earlier today asking me if I knew about the Acme on Beverwyck Road and then it hit me... it's right across the street! Oh well. There isn't much to see here anyway. The Acme was relatively short lived. Opened in 1963 and was gone by 1979. Certainly done in by the much larger Grand Union. ACME + Plated signs!

The photo above was taken at the Edgewater store and the one below is from Weehawken. Truth be told I didn't read the small print and just assumed the signs were announcing the arrival of Plated at Acme. After taking a closer look while preparing this post, I see that is not the case. The signs simply announce that Acme and Plated have teamed up. To what end? It's not clear. I went to the website and found no mention of Acme at all. I assume both stores will be carrying the meal-kits but can't be sure.  Guess I'm just too anxious to see how this whole thing plays out!

MEAL KITS AT WEIS MARKETS >>>

Sopped in the Hillsborough Weis recently and found this display just inside the entrance. Their very own meal-kits! Have to say the pictures on the boxes did make the meals quite tempting. I happened to grab the Fettuccini Alfredo with Kale for a closer look and was shocked at how light the box was. Dinner for two? Felt more like lunch for one. Still, it was interesting to see how one supermarket chain is jumping into the meal-kit game.

News Break:
NEWARK SUPERFRESH
TO BECOME FOOD LION!

This location was initially on Acme's list of acquired stores. For reasons not quite confirmed, Acme wound up passing on the store at the last minute. Could they not secure a lease guarantee? This was an issue at many locations Acme was interested in buying. Some of the stores had leases that would be expiring within the next few years and Acme wasn't able to lock in pricing for renewing the leases when the time came. Another factor could have been the store's need for costly upgrades. The building was among the oldest and most outdated of all the stores Acme was interested in acquiring.

Now news have come that Food Lion will be taking over the store. No word on how much work they will be doing prior to moving in. The landlord will be spending $4.5 to upgrade the shopping center.

Coal Township Acme Revisited!

Photos courtesy of John from WISL1480.com

Today we're returning to the former Coal Township Acme four years after our first visit. The BRL Grocery Outlet has since left the building and it now stands abandoned. John stopped by the store earlier this year to find it still a remarkably intact Acme inside and out A second batch of photos below will unfortunately reveal vandals have finally broken in and have begun to trash the place.

This store was a classic 33M model.

If you look closely, you can see Acme's original Produce letters still on the wall.

Views through the windows along the front of the store...

This wooden structure in front of the checkouts still baffles me. What on Earth was it's purpose? Definitely added after the Acme left. Have to wonder if someone had hit one of those columns with a full cart could the whole thing come crashing down? What is the point of it all??

The crazy thing about seeing this store and being a person of a particular age, I can remember walking into Acmes identical to this (layout and décor) back in the early 80's thinking... "Wow, this store is huge! And so modern!!" How times have changed.

Bakery Department tile here on the right.

Acme's clock still above the exit. We'll have a look at the front of it down below.

Could these seriously be the original ceiling tiles? They are in extraordinary condition throughout the store. The lights are ALL Acme. Standard issue in stores built in late 70's and early 80's.

FAST FORWARD TO SEPTEMBER...

Better view through the front door thanks to vandals who have now gotten in the place. Still blows my mind that Acme's Produce Department has barely changed four decades later.

The place is sadly getting trashed.

The refrigerated cases you're seeing here are not left over from the Acme. They were added later a and place several feet from the Dairy wall.

WEEHAWKEN'S
FRONT-END DISASTER!!!

SATURDAY EARLY AFTERNOON.
TOTAL OF THREE REGISTRES OPEN.
TWO EXPRESS.
ONE FULL-SERVICE.

Made the huge mistake of stopping in the Weehawken Acme for a two items. Before I got in the ridiculously long line at the express registers, I walked along the front-end to see if there were any other options. Shocked to see just ONE register open for all the non-express shoppers. I even double checked to make sure one was open but had the light off. Nope. All closed. As you can see above, the shoppers in line at the lone open register were looking toward Customer Service with a "what the hell" look on their faces.

The manager on duty was walking around, clearly saw the lines and did nothing about it. I wasn't surprised. I've seen managers here standing around completely unfazed by absurdly long lines. The two express cashiers kept looking back  to see how long their line was. They were nearly as frustrated as the customers. When I finally made it up to one of the cashiers, I asked "why are there never any registers open here?" She put her hands up in the air and shook her head while saying "The company... the company..." I took that all to mean they don't get enough labor hours for cashiers. But they certainly seem to get enough labor hours for the store as I always see plenty of employees walking around this place doing absolutely nothing.

Back in the early to mid 2000's, Pathmark used to run this place with nearly every register open on a Saturday. There would be lines of customers at every single one. Of course Pathmark ran into it's own problems which chased most of those customers away but it baffles my mind that Acme is doing nothing to win any of those people back. In fact, they're offering even worse customer service than Pathmark ever did! If the self-checkouts were still here, Acme could have just one additional employee on the clock and have SEVEN registers up and running for shoppers. But I suppose that would make too much sense.

This video is a little rough. The camera never stops moving for a second but you will get some glimpses of the now abandoned Burlington Acme.

Half of the store is being used for Halloween Spirit. You can see the aisle markers are still hanging just beyond the rear displays.

The other half of the store still filled with Acme's stuff...

They're not back in any stores I shop in! Comments have been coming into the blog for various locations that the self-checkouts are getting reinstalled. Most recently 19th and Oregon Pike in Philly and the Westmont New Jersey stores. Don't know why they aren't fast tracking the return of self-checkouts to the former A&Ps and Pathmarks. Removing them did nothing but alienate potential Acme shoppers as you can clearly see for yourself in yelp and google reviews for any of the converted stores.

The strange thing about this subject line is there is no mention IN the email about the self-checkouts. I looked through the new circular and it's got nothing. No information on Acme's website either. Just the subject line. Oh well... it's a promising sign nonetheless!

Interior photos courtesy of Ian A.

Quality Built along with The Frosted Mug have officially arrived at the Newtown Acme! The store previously had the deluxe Chalkboard Market décor which has slowly been fazed over the last few years. Surprising that it took this long for one of Acme's top stores to get a full remodel.

Updated Lancaster Meats sign now being used for the remodels.

The current Newtown store has nevert been fully featured on the blog. I visited the store back in 2009 when I photographed the former Newtown Acme (photo below). Back in those days, taking pictures with a camera phone was more trouble than it was worth. Plus, Acme Style's mission at the time was to document former Acmes only. So I can't link you to previous coverage of this store, but I can send you over to coverage of the former store which continues to be one of the coolest locations ever covered on the blog! The store is long gone now but you can still have a tour by clicking here.
