XTRA SAVINGS
ARE OFFICIALLY HERE!

The circular above runs from Friday, April 21
through Thursday, April 27th

SOMETHING MORE FOR LESS
IS OUT >>>

The sale signs shoppers have been familiar with
for the past 4 years.

XTRA SAVINGS
IS IN >>>

Acme has been using the Xtra Savings logo for the past few years but
had reserved it featured sale items and items on sale for just a few days.

UPDATED SHELF SIGNS AND TAGS
THROUGHOUT THE STORE >>>

The savings logo gets a little lost on tags that
have other promotions added in like Monopoly and
product information like glutten-free.

Definitely a nice improvement over the sale signage that had been used for the past 4 years. Simpler, single message and bolder logo. And it's all coming with legitimately lowered prices. While I have yet to notice Acme lowering regular prices, the amount of items on sale has increased dramatically. Now if they'll just open MORE registers!

News Break:
ALBERSTONS TO ACQUIRE
WHOLE FOODS?

Another week, another rumor about which supermarket chain Alberstons is looking to snap up next! (Maybe they should just work on improving the ones they currently own before taking on any more troubled chains but that's just my opinion) Whole Foods is currently very vulnerable to a takeover and word is that numerous companies, including Kroger, Publix and even Amazon, have shown interest. Confirmation of Alberstons exploring the possibility of acquiring Whole Foods has gained traction in the past few days. You can find plenty of articles online but I'm linking to The Morning Call which has one of the better headlines... "Report: Acme parent company considers takeover bid for Whole Foods". You can check it out by clicking here.

Acme – Bergenfield, New Jersey

$

Location: 80 New Bridge Rd, Bergenfield, NJ

Some history of the Bergenfield Pathmark courtesy of Stephen... The Newbridge Road Pathmark was a replacement for a smaller store that was located in the central business district. The current store was built on the site of the former headquarters of Parents Magazine. A Centennial A&P was just across the street with a Grand Union very close by.

Pathmark reopened as an Acme on October 14, 2015. The beige and gray paint on the facade is among the very few changes Acme has made to this store since it opened. Acme hasn't even sprung for new register lights which are desperately needed.

This particular road trip I took found one completely dead Acme after the next. I was encouraged by the amount of cars in the parking lot at this store but there was hardly a soul in the place.

Floral is to the left of the entrance. "Pathmark" has been removed from the signage. This store does not have a café which would be in this spot.

Pharmacy is over to the right under the second floor offices.

The beautifully stocked Produce Department is straight ahead with Seafood to the rear. Not a shopper to be seen on a Saturday afternoon. The Bakery is in the front corner at the other end of the store which is not a spot I ever recall seeing for it in any other Pathmark.

The removal of "Pathmark" left a big empty space on this sign.

Very clean and well stocked store.

The Seafood employee was so bored he was standing out front waiting to greet customers.

Health foods down this aisle which wrap around into the refrigerated section of Produce.

We got a shopper!

Thought there was a good crowd at the Deli but on closer look I realized it was mostly employees.

Kosher aisle.

Maybe I was here at a weird time. The store was loaded with freshly prepared foods so it must get busy at some point.

Acme's standard front-end with 3 registers open. Unfortunately I walked out of this store just like I did in Elmwood. The express line wasn't long but the cashier was far more interested in chatting with a coworker than ringing anyone up. I have ZERO patience for that kind of crap. Fortunately the Acmes that I shop at regularly have relatively well run front-ends otherwise I would shop at Acme at all.

Customer Service counter in the center of the front end.

Hand-me-down register light from a 90's A&P. Acme installed new registers in the area where the self-checkouts used to be. Not sure if Acme brought this sign in from another store or if Pathmark had already done so. The other registers have numbers printed on paper taped up to the register lights.  Time for an upgrade.

AERIAL VIEWS

A look at the former A&P and Grand Union in the immediate area.

There is a farmers market in this shopping center which probably hurts the Acme.

The Pathmark was built sometime between 1987 and 1995. Parents Magazine headquarters is still standing in the historic areal above.

Reset in Weehawken!

Location: 4100 Park Avenue, Weehawken, NJ

I knew this day was coming sooner or later and so far I'm hating every minute of it. Acme is really switching this store up compared to other resets they've done in the area. Household products are all getting moved from the first few aisles to the opposite end of the store. Hard to tell yet where everything else is getting moved to at this point. The store is a mess. No signs of a décor swap and I suspect on won't be coming anytime soon. If Acme isn't bothering to fix up the dingy Jersey City store (more on that tomorrow), why would they put any money into this place, which is one of the most consistently clean grocery stores I have ever shopped in. Then again, a décor swap would be super easy here since the store doesn't need any other upgrades. A&P renovated every inch of this store, from floor to ceiling, back in 2012. Both Pathmark and Acme have managed to keep the place in pristine condition ever since.

Update: I'll be posting an update on the Jersey City store on Friday. The post didn't get finished for today. Also... a Bonus Store is coming on Monday!

Another update: I'll be posting an update on the Jersey City store on Saturday. Life just keeps throwing other things at me! Sorry to be such a messy blogger these days.

The seasonal aisle is getting some more shelving. All the half-high aisles on this side of the store have been built up a foot or two higher. The rear second half of this aisle is becoming a double wide. It looks like their putting in a designated health food department here but still hard to tell for sure. Black shelving is going in to the next aisle over from this one. One thing is for sure so far... the Weehawken Acme is getting TONS of new products on the shelves. Today I was shocked to see the new selection of organic powdered protein mix. Even bought some that was on sale!

Acme's standard issue black end caps are being installed throughout the store.

Loving the new Polar display! These seltzers are a regular item on my shopping list and guess what... Acme has them CHEAPER than ShopRite on a regular basis!!!

WHY SUCH LITTLE LOVE
THE JERSEY CITY STORE???

Location: Location: 125 18th St, Jersey City, NJ

Starting off with a quick rundown of the history of this store, which has been given in some previous posts... this location opened as a Waldbaum's in the late 80's and was later rebranded an A&P with virtually no changes made to the interior. In fact, the interior remained virtually untouched until the "fresh" remodel in the mid-2000's. The only change to the décor over those years was the removal of the department signage in favor of painted murals that looked like they were made by grade school kids. The overall atmosphere was far more 70's than 80's and by the 2000's, the place felt incredibly dated.

I shopped here often throughout the 2000's and was baffled by the lack of a remodel especially with the Newport area booming with redevelopment. A&P finally came to their senses and rolled out an extensive floor to ceiling "fresh" remodel. I believe it was done in 2006 or 2007. After the grand-reopening, business here when through the roof! I actually had to stop coming here on the weekends since the place was absolutely nuts. Reviewers on yelp often sited A&P's high prices but preferred shopping here over the nearby ShopRite since the store was so much nicer.

Well times have certainly changed since then. ShopRite opened a new location in Hoboken and Target, directly behind the A&P, received the Pfresh remodel significantly expanding their grocery offerings. Both stores siphoned off a good amount of business from the A&P fresh.

In 2015, Acme took over the A&P fresh with a minimal amount of improvements on what had become a pretty tired store. New lighting in Produce and all new registers along the front-end were about all Acme could muster. Such a shame since this place is not doing anywhere near it's potential buisness. The Jersey City ShopRite is a dreadful store and any competitor with a clue could easily win over a decent amount of their shoppers. Why Acme hasn't done a floor to ceiling remodel baffles me all over again. So let's take a closer look...

SHOPPING CART MESS!

Hey, cool... some old Acme carts! But wait, what are they doing here? Couldn't Acme spring for more new carts instead of bringing in two rounds of older models? This scene reminds me of the Acmes in the 80's. All sorts of random styled carts strewn all over the place.

Acme's newest model of carts in front with the older green carts in the next row.

You can see some all-metal carts behind this plastic basket model.

Really worth saving these and hauling them all the way to Jersey City?

DARK AND DINGY INTERIOR!

Every time I come to this store now I always think about how dirty it is before I arrive. Once I step inside, I realize it's actually not dirty at all. Well, with one exception... the ceiling. It is awful. I believe most of the tiles are a holdover from the Waldbaum's days with A&P painting them beige for the "fresh"remodel. Why Acme hasn't ripped the whole thing out and replaced it by now... baffles me. I also think they should move all the lighting to the ceiling and brighten the place up.

Shoppers, please don't look up.

All new fancy registers but still no Quality Built register lights!

Saturday and not much going on. They did have four registers open which is an improvement over the two they usually have going at this hour. Had I taken this photo back in the late 2000's, you'd see a sea of shoppers waiting in line.

Still no Acme sign at the end of "Thank You For Shopping".

NEARBY SHOPRITE AND BJ'S
TO CLOSE???

The shopping center which is home to the ShopRite and BJ's is scheduled for total redevelopment. The initial plans show no place for either store. The property was to be separated into multiple blocks with smaller retail stores. The Pep Boys has already been torn down and replaced with a giant tower.  Public outcry over the potential loss of ShopRite lead to the developers claiming the store had been worked into new plans but those plans have yet to be revealed. There is speculation that if ShopRite remains here, it may eventually be torn down and rebuilt which would be a huge boon for the Acme. They could win shoppers over and keep them even after ShopRite reopened since no amount of redevelopment here can save the nightmare parking situation. For a look at the original plans for this shopping center, check out JerseyDigs by clicking here.

Food Bazaar – North Bergen, New Jersey

Location: 1425 Kennedy Blvd, North Bergen, NJ

Opened as an A&P in the 90's and converted to a Food Basics in the mid-2000's, becoming one of the most successful in the chain. The store was remodeled and reconfigured each and every time A&P tweaked the Food Basics concept. This location was one of the few to survive all the way through A&P's final day. Food Bazaar opened last November after completing an extensive transformation of the interior. I'm not familiar at all with Food Bazaar. This is the first of their stores I have ever stepped into and I have to say, I was pretty impressed! It is light years better than the A&P or Food Basics that had come before.

BEFORE >>>

Heading in for a completely different experience than Food Basics offered...

BEFORE >>>

The A&P was essentially gutted for the conversion to Food Basics.

Food Bazaar spared no expenses on the décor and I love every bit of it.

The produce department is far superior to the nearby ShopRite.

Large seafood department just beyond produce.

Huge juice selection.

Produce in front, seafood in the middle with the meat department in the rear corner.

Dairy remains along the back wall but it is now set up as a two-sided aisle with more cases running down the left side...

BEFORE >>>

A pass-through to grocery just before the start of the dairy aisle.

Have you ever seen a store with "Grocery" getting it's own signage?

Back in dairy looking towards the meat department.

The product mix is interesting here. Basics, ethnic and higher-end items througout. They were missing some items I buy on a regular basis but had plenty of other options I'm not used to seeing.

BEFORE >>>

The bakery and deli return to the same exact spot from the A&P days.

Interesting deli counter... is it self-service or full-service? Actually it's both but I was a little confused at first.

Liquor department just beyond the bakery.

Aisle along the back of the store.

Warehouse type shelving for grocery. The store does not have a pharmacy and little to no selection of health and beauty.

Fiora paper products! I got hooked on this line when Acme returned to my area. The brand had a huge push during Acme's SuperValu's days but has since been discontinued. I suspect it was done away with to make more room for Safeway's products. Many national brands were cleared off of Acme's selves when Safeway's brands took over.

Giant barrel above the liquor department!

Great front-end! Huge fans above the registers. Old-timey register lights which can clearly be seen from any direction. And... EIGHT registers open when the store wasn't even terribly busy!

Bonus Memorabilia!

Came across this while digging through some things I've had in storage for many many years. This bag dates back to the late 90's, an era when Giant of PA was the greatest supermarket in the world! The whole "Walter is picking our produce" campaign was an undeniable dud. Billboards went up all over the place announcing the arrival of Walter with no further details in an attempt to build suspense. It was eventually revealed that "he" was now selecting and approving the produce for Giant. I could have cared less. Never did notice a difference or improvement in Giant's already excellent produce. The whole campaign was absolutely ridiculous and, in my opinion, one of Giant's only missteps in the 90's.

Classic Marsh Supermarket!

Video courtesy of BrownJulius

After hearing of the impending demise of Marsh Supermaketes, I headed over to Youtube to see if there were any interesting videos of their stores and I totally hit the jackpot! BrownJulius shot this excellent video of the classic Greenwood Indiana Marsh Supermarket which had been hardly touched since the 70's. It looks like the 80's got its revenge on the wall above the lunch and meat departments, however.  The 70's areas of the store, right down the the floor, have similar elements to the Acmes of the 70's. Then again, most supermarkets during that era had very similar décor style. Thinking outside the box wasn't as trendy back in those days. Below is the write BrownJulius has for his video...

Published on Dec 2, 2015
Having spent a great deal of time in Muncie's Marsh Supermarket as a wee child in the late 70s, I was delighted to find one that looked pretty much exactly the same still standing in Greenwood in 1999. I had my trusty Sony Digital 8 with me, but the battery was near dead. Shot a tragically small amount of footage, fully intending to come back. When I did a few months later- too late! Gone forever.

And keep an eye out at the very end for a quick look at the same clock Acme had in their stores in the 70's and 80's! I caught it the first time I watched the video but forgot to mention it. Thanks to Thomas for writing in and pointing that out!

Qualtiy Built in Tuckerton!

Location: 425 Route 9, Tuckerton, New Jersey

The Tuckerton Acme was remodeled over the winter of last year with the grand reopening being held on April 22, 2016. The above graphic gave a preview of the planned improvements. When I announced the remodel on the blog, I doubted the décor would be getting changed out during the remodel. This store has undergone previous "remodels", and even an expansion, while always retaining the same décor. Last summer it became evident that the Jersey Shore stores were on the fast-track for Quality Built.

The super-deluxe Industrial Circus décor, along with the lighting, was completely trashed to make way for the Quality Built décor. Interesting to see the remodeled section in the photo above looking more like the "before" with it's old school florescent lighting and minimal décor. The "less is more" approach is becoming a major trend. Giant/Carlisle recently rolled out a new décor package and if it was anymore minimal there would simply be nothing on the walls!

BEFORE >>>

I've actually always thought the "grand aisle" in Tuckerton was among the nicest I'd ever seen. Of course I've always been a big fan of the Industrial Circus décor and I know a lot people are not.

The Bakery has been reconfigured with seating added to the front of the store.

BEFORE >>>

Too bad they didn't use the same lighting they put into the converted stores. It at least has a little more visual interest than plain ol' fluorescent tubes.

No changes to the tile behind the Deli of the flooring.

BEFORE >>>

I believe the Pharmacy was reconfigured. I don't have a "before" picture but I don't think the department was rounded like it is now.

Customer Service was most definitely reconfigured. No signage for it on the wall, however. Seems strange since there is some room there. Just a sign hanging from the ceiling.

ACME Circular Bag!

Just a quickie for today... found this on my front porch yesterday, stuffed with circulars. Haven't seen an Acme branded circular bag in a while now. They were a pretty constant thing back when Acme returned to North Jersey. Nice to see some advertising from the company. The TV commercials have long been gone, as too all the billboards that were all over the place. And especially nice to see Acme going harder with their lower prices, which have in fact improved over the past few months. Now if they would just address their disastrous front-ends! I started typing a recent experience that I had at the West New York store but stopped. I'm as exhausted from complaining about the lines as I have been from waiting in them!!!

Fire at the Bensalem Acme!

Location: 2301 Pasqualone Blvd, Bensalem, PA

Fire broke out at the Bensalem Acme on Saturday morning. The store was evacuated with no injuries reported. The fire was contained to the roof along the front section of the store. The news is coming a little late to the blog since I had little to no internet access this past weekend. Thanks to everyone for sending in the news! This location has not been covered on the blog but you can see some photos on google by clicking here

Acme's Jersey Shore Reusable Bag!

Acme recently began selling a new reusable bag which celebrates the chain's history along the Jersey Shore. The illustration by Katie Herkins (sp?) includes landmarks and various town names where Acmes are located. Personally, I would have loved to see a representation of an Acme store included in the mix. Regardless, the bag is really fun and it's great seeing something designed exclusively for Acme!

A note about posting: Acme Style has not officially closed for summer break although I haven't been able to get any posts done in the last few weeks. There will be a blast of posts coming soon followed by an official break. I will add an announcement to this post to give you a firm date for the start of the blast.

NEW LOWER PRICES!!!

These new shelf tags began appearing about two weeks ago indicating that Acme was on the verge of another "low price" campaign. They were, and the campaign officially launches today! Funny thing though, I took a quick stroll through my local Acme yesterday and couldn't find one of these tags anywhere. Not sure why they seemed to have disappeared. Perhaps the big push for the tags was happening this morning just before the new circular went into effect. I haven't been able to judge for myself the legitimacy of the new lower prices. Not a single item I buy regularly have had one of these tags. I'll be sure to stop in an Acme today to see if I have better luck!

THIS WEEK'S CIRCULAR  >>>

This is the front page of the outer wrap for this week's circular. Let's hope this Acme sticks with this longer than they did with the last round of "new lower prices" that began back in late 2015. If you blinked, you missed it and then prices shot through the roof as 2016 wore on.

THE OFFICIAL COVER >>>

CUSTOMIZED ADS >>>

The Weehawken store has been getting its very own ad for the past month. I'm sure this same ad is being used at other stores located in ethnically diverse areas but it's nice seeing the store's address printed on both sides of the ad giving it a very customized feel. I wonder if this new approach may have been started to prevent another crash and burn situation like the recent closing of the Newark, New Jersey store. Like Newark, Weehawken's variety of ethnic products have taken a big hit since the Pathmark days. I'll be covering the reset of the store in an upcoming post.

SIDE NOTE:

Did any catch Acme's INSANE ice cream sale two weeks ago? All pint-sized ice cream was on sale for $2.88 each, all week long! I can't remember the last time I saw Haagen Dazs or Ben and Jerry's priced that low at Acme or anywhere else for that matter. The sale included every single brand including Talentie Gelato and the high-priced, new protein rich ice creams like Halo and Enlightened. Then to make it even crazier, Acme kept Ben and Jerry's, and Talenti on sale for $2.88 for a full second week! Unbelievable.

THIS JUST IN >>>

Supermarket News has an article covering
Acme's new low price campaign!
Check it out by clicking here.

Some highlights from the Jon Springer penned article...

"The campaign, which will mark the reduced items with tags in store, is among the first visible changes since Jim Perkins returned to his previous role as president of the Malverne, Pa.-based brand. As previously reported, Perkins, Albertsons’ EVP of special projects replaced Dan Croce as Acme’s president last month in a move an Albertsons spokeswoman said would assist former A&P stores and employees transition to Acme’s system."

"Sources have said that some of the 70-plus A&P stores acquired by Acme in late 2015 have not performed to expectations."

This Acme shopper asks...

SO WHERE ARE THEY?

Yesterday afternoon I hit an Acme to check out all the "New Lower Prices"! Ummmm... couldn't find hardly one. Walked up and down every aisle, scanning all of the shelves. I was moving quickly so my results are not exactly fool-proof however, the tags really stand out so they're hard to miss. Here's what I personally found around the store:
  • Coffee:  NONE
  • Tea: One brand. Never heard of it.
  • Cereal: Golden Grahams! And a few Acme brand items.
  • Cookies:  NONE
  • Crackers: A few Acme brand items.
  • Salad Dressing: NONE
  • Peanut Butter and Jelly: A few Acme's Open Nature only.
  • Granola Bars: One. Acme's Signature Brand item.
  • Bottled Juice: NONE
  • Pasta:  NONE
  • Spagetti Sauce: NONE except for Rao's which is still at the same "new low price"/yet higher than everyone else, since the 2015 campaign.
  • Tunafish:  NONE
  • Canned Vegtables: One. Del Monte canned Zucchini. Get 'em which they last!
  • Pet aisle: TONS! Oh wait. Just on Acme's Priority Pet products.
  • Paper Plates & Cups: NONE
  • Laundry: One. Acme's Bright Green Laundry Detergent.
  • Garbage Bags:  NONE
  • Food Storgae Bags:  NONE
  • Foil and Plastic Wrap: NONE
  • Candy: One.
  • Entire Baking Aisle: Acme's Signature Kitchen oils only.
  • Frozen Pizza:  NONE
  • Frozen Vegtabeles:  NONE
  • Frozen Dinners: A good 10 to 15 items! Wow!!
  • Frozen Breakfast: Eggo brand only.
  • Frozen Desserts: NONE
  • Ice Cream and Novelties: NONE
  • Packaged Deli: NONE
  • Packaged Cured Meats: NONE
  • Yogurt:  NONE
  • Orange Juice: One. Acme's Signature Brand single serve bottle.
  • Dairy: Handful of Lucerne Brands. No national brands.
  • Baby: A few on Acme's own Mom to Mom brand.
  • Health and Beauty: NONE, ZERO, ZILCH

Again, this list is from my own personal observation as a regular and loyal Acme shopper. And it's not to say that I didn't see tons of sales tags up and down every aisle. But "New Low Prices" were tough, if not impossible, to find especially on national brands. Very disappointing since Acme's last two rounds of lower prices got off to decent starts. I found only one item that I buy regularly to have a "New Low Price". Problem was... the price wasn't "new". It was the regular price Acme was charging for months before the insane wave of price increases that hit at the end of 2016.

A blast from the past...

THE RIDGE AVENUE ACME
JUNE 30, 1991!

Classic photo courtesy of Chris Putro

Location: Location: 8600 Ridge Ave, Philadelphia PA

I was tipped off to this photo being posted on facebook and was able to get permission to share it. Got some great bonus material as well, which you can check out below. I love seeing classic photos like this! At first, I couldn't place this store in my head even though I knew it was in the Andorra Shopping Center. The place looks completely different today, which you can see below. The new top-heavy facade makes the store appear smaller from the outside than the previous facade. That said, this store's exterior upgrade is one of the nicest we've ever seen on a classic Acme!

The Ridge Avenue Acme was covered on the blog back in 2011. Not much has changed since then other than the aisle markers getting switched out with the PF&H version 3 signs and some case upgrades. In fact, not much has changed here since the day the store opened. The layout has been preserved for decades with the only major change being the addition of an in-store Bakery during the 80's Remodel. It's one of the most classic Acmes still in existence today!

You can enjoy an updated tour of the store on catnapped retail central's flickr photostream by clicking here.

I don't recall my Acme ever having charts with the actual weekly prices on them although my check-out days were over by 1993.
