Extensive remodel underway in Rehoboth!

The Rehoboth store received the Quality Built refresh months ago but Acme has circled back to launch a more extensive remodel. Marv details the progree for us below....

Acme Rehoboth Beach is getting better each day. Store is currently under renovation. Acme is investing a TON of money in this store where Superfresh didn't invest a dime.

All aisle relocations have almost been completed. All the center freezer cases have been replaced with upright cases. Allowing more frozen merchandise. Some selections have expanded while others have cleared out. Floor in Produce department is totally ripped up currently with concrete exposed and is in the process of being replaced.

Pharmacy has relocated to far left corner of store. This area was where the "this is your acme" white wall was emphasized with spotlights. New drop off and pick up area as well as a consultation and waiting area has been created and is way more open and easier to access. Pharmacy is now open but store was way to busy for me to get good pictures.

Former Pharmacy is being cleared out as well as the front corner where the tv was on the wall from the main entrance to get ready for Starbucks.

Former Hot To go area is being prepped to become a fresh baked pizza area.

Fruit cutting room will be created soon as shown by the remodel plans.

Old School Acme Schedule!

Not sure when this "Personel Schedule" was phased out but it was used at my Acme into the 90's. I used to live or die by the this sheet of paper. Mostly die... never enough cashiers scheduled for my shifts and you could always count on one or two calling out.

Reset at Edgewater Acme!

Location: 481 River Rd, Edgewater, NJ
Opened as an Acme on October 9, 2015

So the reset was completed here months ago but I never got a chance to circle back. Nothing too Earth shattering happened but there are a few interesting changes to see. Overall, the reset turned out nicely. The household and HABA department resets turned out to be a little disappointing but the rest of the store was a solid success. Interesting to see that Acme restored paper products along the wall of aisle 1. A signature location in Pathmark for decades. A&P moved them to the back of the store a few years ago during one of the many resets this store endured over the last 10 years.

This is a huge fail. All that bug and roach spray right next to the napkins? I don't like it. The sprays should go to the end of the aisle with hardware with lightbulbs relocated to this spot.

A big change from the Pathamark days... bread, and PB&J now along the back wall leading to the Bakery.

Brand-new black shelving in the health food department. The shelves were made higher bringing in better selection throughout the department. Pathmark's signage still remains hanging from the ceiling.

Acme definitely stepped up the selection for the dry goods but left the dairy case in this department with even less selection than Pathmark.

Cerial, coffee and tea in aisle 1. It's gonna take some time getting used to this.

Seasonal was moved from Pathmark's double wide aisle 17 over to aisles 11 and 12. Here we now have a half double-wide aisle.

Greeting cards moved from the household side of the store over to grocery. Had to make room for all of that bread over there!

They tricked me! When I first reported on the reset, I thought Pathmark's doube wide aisle was being removed as they were installing new shelving down the center. Turns out, Acme shifted the double-wide aisle over one aisle. Water runs along the right and chips along the left. Pathmark used their double-wide aisle for seasonal and a revolving selection of featured items and deals.

We saw this same double-wide aisle set-up at the newly remodeled Audubon store. Check it out here.

The next step Acme needs to take here is to replace the tile around the perimeter of the store. The flooring in the aisles is in good shape but the perimeter, especially around the entrance, is a mess. Would also love to see the faux hardwood flooring go into Produce. I'm surprised Acme hasn't done this yet since they have been doing it in other stores and all signs are that Edgewater is a top performing A&P/Pathmark conversion.

Exterior evening photos and the tour of the interior courtesy of Gary A.

Another long-awaited Acme makes it to the blog! I hate to admit it but Gary sent in these pictures two years ago and I have been meaning to get them up ever since. There is a huge back log of photos in the Acme Style inbox and I do tend to loose track. Sometimes I postpone posting pictures if I'm not in the right mind-set to post a particular store. Sounds crazy but I've gotta be feeling a store to get it up on the blog!

I believe there are only three other Acmes to have this exact exterior treatment... Hockessin, Ogletown and the long-gone Acme in Turnersville, New Jersey. Stores like Downingtown are nearly identical to these just without the greenhouse-style vestibule.

The very first time I saw this store was back in the early 90's. Wound up passing it on my way to Ocean City, Maryland for vacation. Nearly drove off the road! I had never seen an Acme like it before. At the time, the red oval logo was on the front of the store and the greenhouse-style vestibule was all clear glass and wide open on the inside. It has since been covered over with apples, drop ceiling added inside and walls added to create an interior alcove. Not nearly as much fun as it used to be! The interior of the store had the 80's Remodel, although it hadn't been remodeled. It was built with the décor. (If memory serves me right, this was a replacement store for a 33M model just up the road. That store was abandoned with the 80's Remodel clearly seen through the front windows. The building appears to be gone now.) Upon entering this store, I couldn't believe how bit and beautiful it was! I think I walked around the whole place with my jaw on the floor. Acme had built other stores in the late 80's about this size with the same layout but I had never been in one. A HUGE difference from the 8 to 10 aisle stores I had been familiar with up until that point.

So let's head inside to see how the store looks today! Assuming it hasn't had any major changes in the late two years.

Here's a shot of the right side of the vestibule. (We started to head into the left side). You can see the wall and drop ceiling that have been added since the store was built. Just a plain old vestibule now.

This store had the deluxe Premium Fresh and Healthy version 2 remodel in recent years. We're going to get an exclusive look at the previous décor package in this post was well.

All new flooring throughout. While the layout is virtually identical to the stores built during the 90's, these late 80's/very early 90's stores didn't have the windows and arched ceilings in Produce.

The fresh cut fruit section was moved to the side wall. You can see the signage under "fruits & vegetables". The former Fruit Bar is now the Salad Bar, as you will see after the "before" photo.

BEFORE >>>

The Industrial Circus décor was certainly busy décor, especially when compared to what replaced it.

Nice, streamlined center aisle!

The short-lived store directories. Only seen in the first two versions of the PF&H remodels.

Looks like "EGGS • JUICE" was installed before "dairy". No room made for the descender on the "y".  Wow, that's hard to look at.

The "y" done right along this wall!

BEFORE >>>

Customer Service is in the front corner.

One thing missing from the remodel here is the drum lights in frozen and along the front-end.

An alcove for newspapers and magazines in what used to be a completely open vestibule. I wonder if Customer Service was ever in this spot. Seems like a better location than where it is now.

Closed in the early 90's

Could have sworn this store was on the blog. Pictures came in a long time ago and I'm sure prepped the post but its no where to be found. Good thing Stephen sent in another round! This is one of the very few, fully intact, pitched-roof Acmes I had ever been while it was STILL an Acme! Came across this place back in the early 90's on a road trip to the outlets in Reading. The interior still had the 70's décor on the walls. The store wasn't in the best of shape so I figured its days were numbered. I made a point to stop in every time I was in Reading. Then one day, I came down the hill and saw the Acme was gone. Another store had taken over. Can't remember if it was C-Town at that time or not but it was a sad day nonetheless.

Acme's lava-lamp tiles are undoubted still under those pictures of fruits and vegetables.

Location: 3241 U.S. 9, Freehold, New Jersey

When I put together the Freehold post back in October of last year, I didn't include the historic images because HistoricAerials.com was down at the time. I didn't give it much thought until comments were left mentioned the Acme being built in the exact spot of a former A&P. I immediately jumped back over to HistoricAerials.com, found it working again and saw the Acme was, in fact, built right where an old Centennial A&P had stood. I've been wanting to circle back ever since to get the historic aerials up on the blog. They are finally arriving today! I created a separate post for them since it's quite interesting seeing an old A&P being swapped out for a big new Acme! They will also be added to the end of the Freehold post, which you can view by clicking here

Opening Date: Sometime in the 70's
Closing Date: April 2016

Passed through Shrewsbury last weekend and stopped by the old Acme to see if there's been any changes. Sure has! The interior has been completely gutted. The facade appears to have been set up for two stores taking the space (see exterior photo at the end of the post) but there was no indication that any businesses are lined up to move in.

These stickers next to the entrance are all that's left to indicate an Acme was ever here.

Completely cleared out! Including the second floor along the back.

Breakroom windows up on the former second floor.

The place looks huge all cleared out.

Deluxe Quality Built in Aubudon!

Location:100 Black Horse Pike, Audubon, NJ

The extensive remodel in Audubon is now complete and the store looks fantastic!

Floral has been relocated to the front of the store. It was previously located, and somewhat hidden,  just past the Produce Department. New flooring has been put in throughout the service departments and Produce. As deluxe as this remodel was, Aubudon did not get the fake hardwood flooring like other stores have been given.

Photos were sent in by an anonymous contributor. It seems that some were taken with a different camera which is why you might notice some quality and color differences.

Brand-new cake cases! Former home to fresh baked bread.

BEFORE >>>

A world of difference on this side of the Bakery! Upright cake cases which are a million times better than the usual coffin cases. And finally.... deluxe display cases for pastries and bread. I don't know what took Acme so long to upgrade their Bakery displays. They have been seriously lagging behind all other competitors.

BEFORE >>>

Acme certainly taking a cue from Wegmans' with their brand-new "Healthy Snack Center".

Salad Bar has been moved from along the side wall to a free-standing bar.

Another cue from Wegmans'? Hot Foods bar and it's looking pretty nice from this vantage point.

BEFORE >>>

All new upright cases along the former Salad Bar wall.

BEFORE >>>

Not sure if all the tiling behind the service departments have been replaced. They may have just swapped out the decorative strip from the Chalkboard Market remodel.

BEFORE >>>

Looks like the Lancaster Brand sign got hung a little too high. If it was attached as well as it was in other stores, it will be pealing off the wall in no time.

Heading into the arched roof portion of the store which is a hold over from the former Penn Fruit store that was once located here. New flooring all along the back as well.

BEFORE >>>

Can't tell if this turned out to be a double wide aisle or not!  The soda display is blocking our view. It is unusual for a double-wide aisle to have two aisle markers.

New flooring through frozen and along most of the front-end...

Deluxe Pharmacy...

I can tell you what's not quality built these days at Acme.... the register lights! They don't stand straight for very long. The lights in all the stores in my area are leaning one way or the other. Some looking like they're going to topple completely over at any minute, day after day after day. Makes the front-end of the stores look terrible. The registers here were not swapped out for the new wood-venier stands that are being put in some remodels and A&P converted stores.

Kennedy Fast Care has been added since this store was fully covered on the blog 3 years ago.

Deluxe Quality Built Remodel in Lincroft!

Location:616 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, NJ

The Lincroft Acme is continuing to celebrate its grand reopening which officially began on January 20th. The store received a deluxe remodel similar to the remodel in Audobon which is continuing its grand reopening as well. Both stores were among the few to still have the Chalkboard Market décor package. While Audobon had been remodeled with that package, Lincroft has been sporting the décor since opening day back in 1999. While various upgrades have happened here over the years, there hasn't been a full remodel done in 17 years. You never would have guessed that since the store had been impeccably maintained all those years.

No changes to the exterior. The Sav-on signage remains outside with no mention of it inside.

The new Starbucks is officially open. We had a preview of this new addition a few weeks ago while the remodel was underway. This alcove had previously been used for seasonal merchandise. I don't believe Lincroft ever had a coffee shop despite the fact that Starbucks was somewhat standard issue in the Chalkboard Market remodels. This alcove always seemed like a perfect spot for Starbucks. Perhaps one was planned for this store but it didn't wind up happening. Maybe there was one here and it was yanked out like in so many other stores. Regardless, Lincroft has does have a Starbucks now although you would never know it from the outside. I didn't see a single sign indicating a Starbucks was here which may explain why it was completely dead the whole time I was in the store. And I was here in the morning.

New cake cases facing the entrance! Lincroft has always had an exceptional Bakery and this remodel just kicked it up to a whole other level.

Beautiful new flooring AND new produce displays!

This was the first time seeing these great new displays.

Deluxe new displays in the Bakery similar to what we saw in Aubodon. It's unfortunate Acme doesn't offer a more unique selection for their "Artisan Bread". Pretty much all the same stuff ShopRite sells, with both chains being blown away by the selection at the increased variety at most Stop and Shops. As I've mentioned before, Acme lost out big time when they gave up carrying Culinary Circle's fresh baked bread. While the ties to SuperValu had to be broken, Acme should have hung on to the bread as Safeway brought absolutely nothing in comparison.

There are areas of this store that are so nice, it's hard to believe it's an Acme!

Hot Foods here too! Have to say, the food looked really good. Tons of vegetables and a surprisingly light selection of deep fried garbage.

Salad Bar was moved from the wall to a stand-alone display. Acme is rolling out some of the nicest display cases in the industry today!

Former home to the Salad Bar. Cases now line this area leaving the prep area intact. Aubdon lost its prep area but that store is much larger overall.

This back corner is now bright and easy to navigate. This are used to feel more like a cave.

Free standing snack center! I'm interested to see how long these stick around. A&P rolled out a similar bulk foods department in many of their "fresh" remodels but it wasn't long before they get removed. Acme's signage does bring a degree of excitement to the bulk food buying experience.

The tile did not get replaced in the service department but it's still a very nice match to the décor. Lots of flat screens added all around!

There's a huge flat screen up in the corner on the right side. Didn't get a picture of it. Cooking demonstrations were playing on the screen.

Crammed in pretty tight. The kerning between Y and o in every single store absolutely kills me.

I pointed this out back when we previed the remodel... Foods To Go is actually healthy frozen. You can take it to go but you can't eat it til it gets cooked. Isn't that the opposite of foods to go??? Very odd.

All the crazy PF&H category markers are gone! The new shelving looks to have been built higher. This is a size-challenged store. Tops out at 14 aisles and the remodel called for both seasonal and greeting cards to get absorbed into the grocery aisles.

I believe the entire store received new flooring but I can't confirm. Again, the place has always been impeccably maintained.

Old hardwood floors and drum lights are gone from the Frozen aisles. I believe laundry detergent used be along the right aisle which thankfully it's not anymore.

Dairy was expanded along the back wall.

No Sav-on here!

Huge improvement in this corner! The greeting cards got the boot which really opened up this section. It used to be so dark and gloomy over here. Funny thing now is that Floral is a HUGE department in respect to the overall size of the store.

Looks dead but the store was extremely busy. Plenty of registers open which kept lines short and hardly a free spot in the parking lot.

Customer Service has been moved out onto the floor and surrounded with express registers. This are used to be home to the self-checkouts.

Former Customer Service is now used as a seating area. Looks more like the employee break room though.

Simply put... this is now one of the most beautiful Acmes I have ever been to. Wish I could shop here more often!

Couldn't check out the welcome signage in either vestibule with the giant chip displays covering them over.

Wish Acme would take that tagline and run with it. They still have "Something More for Less" on the bags even though all the price reductions from that era have been wiped out and jacked back up. "Getting Better Everyday" has been retired. "Your local favorite supermarket" is still in use but rather sparingly. "You're in for something fresh" is printed on the top of receipts but not seen anywhere else as far as I know. In my opinion, it's time for Acme to get focused, pick a tagline, and stick with it!

Former Acme Location – Keyport, New Jersey

Location: 100 State Route 36, Keyport, NJ

I've passed this store about a million times but never bothered to stop and check the place out until just recently. The property was once home to the Keyport Acme which opened May 14, 1957. Closing date unknown but the building was gone by 1995. The satellite photos seem to suggest the building was torn prior to concrete plans for redevelopment.

The Stop and Shop began its life as an Edwards in late 90's. The Edwards banner was unfortunately retired in 2000 and stores were rebranded as Stop and Shops which was a giant step backwards. I had shopped regularly at two Edwards stores and completely gave up on both when the switch occurred.

While the exterior of the store could not be less inviting and prison-like, the interior is very nice. Actually one of the nicest Stop and Shops I've seen with the original fruit bowl remodel. I've never been a fan of this décor package. It's painfully generic with absolutely everything in the store being either yellow or purple. The bold new black signage in Produce certainly helps breaks up the monotony of it all.

As usual, you won't be seeing a lot of people in most of these pictures but the store was very busy for a Saturday evening.

Edwards flooring remains throughout.

While I was here, I did some price comparisons to the items I buy regularly at Acme. Stop and Shop's prices were lower on nearly every single item. Regardless, I do prefer shopping at Acme.

Upgraded cases in Bakery. Ahold chose a neutral color for these cases that would work well across all of its banners. I don't think it does. Why not chose a more inviting wood-grain look? That said, the Artisan Bread selection is quite nice with unique varieties and organic options. Self service too which is the route some Whole Foods are taking in their recent remodels.

The "Pick Your Own" section has ben reduced with muffins being moved to stand-alone displays.

The Pharmacy is about as inviting as the exterior of the store.

Well staffed front-end with plenty of self-checkouts also available.

Key Foods acquired this former A&P Fresh and recently reopened it as a Superfresh. The company purchased the defunct banner from A&P last February and plans to convert all of its New Jersey stores to Superfresh.

This store began its life as a Stop and Shop which A&P acquired in the 80's and expanded over the years. The store competed with an Acme just across the parking lot for many decades. We'll take a closer look at the Acme in the following post.

Most of the interior photos were sent in to Acme Style a few months back. Unfortunately, I deleted the email after downloading the photos so I am not able to credit the source at this time. If the person who sent these in will contact me, I'll be able to credit your photos however you wish.

A&P's fresh décor remains throughout most of the store. Some new flooring has been put in and the service departments along the back have all new décor.

The Produce department is impressive unfortunately the rest of the store leaves a lot to be desired. While you will see the Superfresh sign outside, you won't see anything in common with the former chain inside.

I stopped in about a week ago to check out the store for myself (and to photograph the nearby former Acme). While the store is still celebrating its grand opening, the place feels more like its about to go out of business. There are huge areas of the store void of any merchandise and the font-end was staffed by one employee who was working both customer service and the one open register.

Key Foods is using the same type of stickers as Acme has to cover the the A&P logo on the fresh food murals.

Nice new photography and signage along the back where the service departments are located.

Some grocery aisles have had their height reduced.

Here's where things get a little confusing. The photo above and below were among the ones sent in a a while back. When I was in the store, this whole area was cleared out. The selection in the Bakery was essentially non-exsistent accept for some cakes.

Completely empty frozen food cases along the right wall.

Not sure what's happening with the Bakery. No bread, no bagels, no fresh baked products to be found.

Overall it feels as though Key Foods bit of more than it can chew with this store.

But the signage does look great!

A former Acme is just across the parking lot! Now home to Walgreens and completely void of any Acme traits. See the next post for coverage of the store.

Continuing with coverage of the former Acmes of Edison. This store on Woodbridge Avenue was Edison's only pitched-roof store. The location opened September 18, 1963. Closing date unknown but it appears to have survived through 1987.

The pitched-roof building extends past the awning for the neighboring strip of stores. This section could have been easily walled off and made into a separate store if Family Dollar hadn't extended all the way over.

Heading around back with no scars along this side of the store. All delivery doors appear to have been along the opposite side.

This store was so small, the second floor housed the compressor room only. You can see scars for the break room along the first floor.

Judging from the aerial photos, this flat-roof section was here during the Acme days. It can be seen as far back as 1979.

Several spots in the store with missing tiles and yes, I could see the pitched-roof! I figured it wouldn't show up in pictures but I gave it a shot anyway.

The second floor to the rear of the store can be seen inside!
