Food Basics – North Bergen, New Jersey

Location: 1425 Kennedy Blvd, North Bergen, NJ

One of just two remaining Food Basics is on it's way out. I popped in to check out the remaining selection of America's Choice products. Not too much left but probably more than in most of the A&P and Pathmarks that are still open. Photos of some of the products are included after our tour of the store.

This store was a fairly nice A&P up until the early 2000's when it was converted to Food Basics. The North Bergen ShopRite replacement store opened around that time. At first A&P tried to compete by doing a light remodel. Not long after, the store was closed and converted to A&P's low-price concept. The company had huge hopes for this new banner. It was an easy way for them to dump unionized employees in all of the service departments. All products in Food Basic stores were prepackaged. The format failed to live up to A&P's expectations and many of these stores have been closing in recent years. The North Bergen location seemed to be very successful. They tampered with the format here many times, never seeming to figure out what these stores needed to be. The last revamp actually included a reduction in sales floor space. That far wall was installed reducing the store by a 2 or 3 aisles. Rather costly move as they had to relocate the frozen food aisle. I would stop in here every once in a while to see what kind of deals they had. It was never worth the hassle. The store was always a mess and the lines at the registers were ridiculously long.

Ummm... the savings are, in fact, about to stop.

After the last revamp, they added a "Dollar Store" to this area. Didn't last long.

Center aisle. It was strange being here for the closing sale. I remember vividly shopping here when the A&P was in it's final days.

News Break:
Pathmark Comeback?

Foodtown operator PSK Supermarkets is looking to acquire the Pathmark brand, logo and domain name. They have placed a bid of $1 million for the assets. Are they planning on resurrecting Pathmark? We'll have to wait and see. A few more details can be found at SupermarketNews.com by clicking here.

Acme Lowers Prices... Again!

Another round of price reductions has swept through Acme! These signs are up all over the store including "NEW Lower Prices" shelf tags up and down every aisle. I have already been pleased with prices at Acme since they have taken over my local A&P and Pathmark stores. Their sale prices are particularly good. I was a bit skeptical when I saw all of this new signage this past weekend. Took a walk around the store, checking out the items I have been buying regularly in the past few weeks and saw, for sure, that the prices have dropped. Have to say... Acme IS getting better every day!

Starbucks kcups now priced $1 to $2 lower than Target!

Wow that's a lot of shelf tags!

Signs are attached to each register along the front end. Have to say too, I'm loving the mymixx app!

Acme – Kirkwood Plaza, Wilmington, DE

The former old-school Pathmark of Kirkwood Plaza is now an Acme! Freshly painted facade is included but the inside is rather dated. The decor package here is four rounds old but as we'll see, it looks pretty decent in the pictures. I believe this package was rolled out in the late 90's and was used until the "Path to Savings" remodels started in the 2000's. It's not a particularly attractive look. When my Pathmark got this package I vividly remember thinking "wow, this place looked better BEFORE the remodel". I believe Acme may have picked at least one other Pathmark with this same interior.

Acme replaced Pathmark's Pharmacy sign. You can see the scar from the former sign to the right.

"Super" scar from Super Center seen here.

No new lighting in Produce! Pathmark lights remain.

The Pharmacy in the front corner. Pretty much the standard spot in Pathmarks of all kinds.

Paper products are still located in aisle 1! A&P had reset many stores in recent years relocating the paper products for the spot where Pathmark shoppers were very used to finding them.

The cases were not painted black here. I imagine Acme has plans to remodel this store sooner than later. The company has kept its Delaware store more up to date than those in other markets.

Bakery in the front corner.

Pathmark used a similar tile pattern around the permitter of the store for the next decor package. You can see a glimpse of it in the abandoned Randolph store above. For more coverage of this location, click here.

The Customer Service sign is from the Path to Savings decor package.

No Acme sign in the front-end. The mymixx smart phone sign hangs in its place.

Haven't seen these bold black numbers on the checkout signs before.

AERIAL VIEWS

Aside from a ShopRite less than 10 minutes away, I'm not seeing any other supermarkets nearby.

The banner is down and the official sign is up. It's big, bold and beautiful! The delay was apparently due to local ordinances dictating sign size although, in the end, Acme wasn't forced to put an embarrassingly small sign on the store like they had to do in Montclair. With the ACME sign finally installed on the store front, we'll take one more look at the evolution of this location...

Acme through the years...

Acme opened here on October 12, 1966.

Acme – Weehawken, New Jersey

Location: 4100 Park Avenue, Weehawken, NJ

The Weehawken Acme opened on November 6, 2015. It's my absolute favorite converted store... so far. Pathmark remodeled the place from floor to ceiling back in 2012. While they did a great job maintaining the store in recent years, Acme came in and cleaned it so thoroughly, it felt like it was remodeled all over again. The interior color scheme goes so perfectly with Acme's black and red signage, I wonder if they'll even bother with a remodel anytime soon.

Some problems with the Christmas decorations here but you have to give the landlord an "A" for effort.

This store was featured in the post "Future Acme Markets" so you may be familiar with many of these photos. The main entrance leads to a concourse with small shops on the left side and the Acme on the right. A laundromat and another entrance are located all the way at the end.

No mini-carts at this Acme. They were here when the store first opened but were gone about a week later. I asked at Customer Service and was told all the carts "walked away". So I said "they were stolen?" And the Customer Service Rep said "Yep, every single one of them." They apparently weren't equipped with the wheel lock that would have prevented them from being removed from the parking lot. Another round of mini-carts with locks is expected to arrive... someday.

Premium Fresh and Healthy store hours sign! You can find these in a lot of converted stores. This location is open 24/7.

Self checkouts used to be to the left next to the floral displays. They didn't add any new registers here. Only nine registers which doesn't always seem to be enough on busy weekends.

Bright new lights in Produce! Check out the before just below...

Acme's produce is seriously about a million times better than Pathmark.

Alcove here on the right due to the second floor offices above. Acme really livened this area up by adding seasonal and baked goods.

The hanging "Live Better" structures were removed. Have a look below for the before...

That all wound up in the dumpster. Sad to see some of A&P/Pathmark's efforts just thrown away, never to be seen again.

The aisles here used to run parallel to the front-end. Can't remember if they switched if for this last remodel of the Path to Savings remodel. It's really crazy how nice this store is these days compared to 10 to 15 years ago.

Soda in this back alcove.

Still a messy mix of Essential Everyday and Safeway products.

Check this out.. refreshe water WITH the ACME logo on it!

The section in the Bakery has improved dramatically since Acme took over.

Acme is doing an incredible job keeping this store clean and stocked. Still looks just like Pathmark yet is nothing like Pathmark at all.

The Meat Department lost "very" in its sign. Now it's just "the best".

A lot of body parts here that I'm just not interested in.

Always found the Deli location in this store to be very odd. All the way in the back corner by the milk.

Acme did a very nice reset of the Dairy Department. Pathmark's arrangement was rather confusing.

Ice cream alcove in the front.

Aisle 19 lost it number along the way. I thought Acme might rotate this sign so another side with "19" on it would face the front but no such luck.

AERIAL VIEWS

The Pathmark was built on a reservoir. The old water tower still stands to the rear of the store and is a major landmark in Weehawken.

The Pathmark was expanded sometime between 1987 and 1995. The newer section has a darker roof and sticks out into the parking lot.

Acme Markets Chestertown MD
The Chestertown Acme held its Grand Reopening on March 13, 2015. The store was expanded and renovated from floor to ceiling. I had been hoping to make a visit  since the reopening but haven't made it down there yet. Will visited the store recently and is brining us our first look at the interior of the store. As you'll see it has the Quality Built decor package and the former pitched-roof ceiling has been replaced with a drop ceiling. This post features Will's photos along with some "before" photos from storewander's flickr collection. A more extensive post on the store's history will be coming in the future.

Acme Markets Chestertown MD
The pitched-roof store that started out in this location had been expanded previously to 25,000 square feet. The latest expansion had the store expanding into storefronts on both sides bringing the total square feet to 41,500.

A Google map screen grab of the former Chestertown Acme located at 348 High Street. Opened November 16, 1950 and closed in March 1, 1967. I don't have confirmation on the exact opening date of the Washington Ave store but it most likely was March 2, 1967.

Weehawken Acme is Getting Better!

Location: 4100 Park Avenue, Weehawken, NJ

Stopped in yesterday and was surprised to see a whole new customer service desk and express registers have been installed where the self-checkouts were located. The removal of the self-checkouts left an odd empty space along the front-end. I had wondered if Acme would add more registers to this area like they have been doing in other stores. The customer service desk was in need of upgrading as Pathmark's desk and counter were on the small side. You can see a "before" shot of the area below....

4 express registers are now located here. Unfortunately there are no register lights.... yet. Security gates have also been added to the entrance and exit.

As I've mentioned, this is by far my favorite Acme conversion! The store did not keep the manager of the Pathmark and it appears the new manager is really trying to take the service to a whole new level. Most of the Pathmark employees stayed on and I can tell you without a doubt, they are much happier working for Acme. While the store overall looks just like it did as a Pathmark, the difference in atmosphere is nothing short of astounding.

Barnegat Acme Opening Soon!

$

Location: 912 West Bay Avenue, Barnegat, NJ

Photos have been sent in giving us a sneak peek at the new Barnegat Acme. Genuardis closed this location back in December 2012 and the building has sat empty ever since. News broke in August that Acme would be taking over the location although the company would not confirm their plans at the time. Well there's no denying it now! The signs are up and the inside in being remodeled...

The Quality Built decor package is up on the walls...

White Produce cases which would be s switch from the usual black cases that have been going into remodeled stores.

The store, which will be Baregat only supermarket, is due to open in early February.

Acme – Warren, New Jersey

Location: 177 Washington Valley Road, Warren, NJ

Acme opened here on November 6, 2015, taking over a plain ol' A&P. The interior dates back to the 90's with A&P passing this store over during 4 rounds of "fresh" remodels. Acme must have seen some potential here that A&P hadn't. There doesn't seem to be any major competition in the nearby area aside from a King's just across the street.

A&P built this store back in 1979 and added an addition to the right side in the 90's. The store has an old-school A&P feel inside but doesn't feel painfully dated. I particularly like the double entrances at the front that lead into an open-air vestibule. Floral is front and center as you walk in.

Looking toward the vestibule and front windows. This store was planned to be the final post of 2015 which explains the ample selection of poinsettias.

Decent grab and go selection, just no signage to draw customers over to the area.

Even though the place is pretty dated, it's still bright, super white and clean!

Checkerboard patterns got a lot of mileage in the 90's.

So this was a fun find... the Kitchen Shop aisle still intact. Kitchen accessories mostly removed to make way for groceries.

The days of hanging merchandise above the cases is thankfully over.

Looking toward the front. The columns would seem to indicate where the addition meets the original store.

The Corner Bakery in the far back corner next to Cold Cuts.

The nearly invisible Café.

The "Fresh Obsessed" aisle markers still in place.

Nope. No Acme sign along the front-end.

Fascinating how the other store signs were designed to have the same shape as A&P's sign...

When I first arrived here, I thought the Walgreens was the original A&P in the center. Looks like a perfectly retrofitted Centennial store. Turns out... it's not. The Centennial-like roof line was added long after the center was first built in 1979.

The Acme in the upper righthand corner with King's in the lower lefthand corner.

Location: 64 Mountain Blvd, Warren, NJ

Very attractive store from the outside. Not sure if King's has always been here or if the building started out as something else.

Nicely remodeled King's store. Has the latest version of their "Where Inspirations Strikes" decor package.

For those not familiar with King's... the stores are on the small side with a focus on gourmet and higher-end brands. Prices are high but the stores are very nice and a fun place to go when you're looking for new things to try. Weekly shopping here is simply out of the question unless you enjoy being completely ripped off.

Only 8 aisles of groceries.

MASSIVE flag in the center of town. This picture doesn't really capture how cool it looks in person.

News Break:
ACME ACQUIRES TWO MORE
A&P SUPERMARKETS

While it doesn't come as a surprise, it did become official late last week. Acme announced it has acquired the A&P stores in Booton, New Jersey and Patterson, New York. Opening dates for each store have not bee announced. In an interesting twist, Acme has also acquired one of A&P's liquor stores in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. Additional details can be found at SupermarketNews.com by clicking here

FIRE AT CLAYTON ACME!

Well here's some news we didn't hear about... a fire at the Clayton Acme back in July. I was googling the Clayton store in hopes of finding some news about the store's remodel. Found this video instead. The fire was contained to the trailer outside but the store did suffer some minor damage. The information included with the video on youtube is below...

July 26 2015 around 2320 hours station 41-1 along with 43-1 and 43-3 were dispatched to the ACME for a building fire. Engine 41-13 arrived on scene with a 55 foot trailer and loading dock well involved and impinging on the store. Ladder 41-16 arrived and forced entry to the store to find a smoke condition inside. Crews found only minor extension to the inside of the store. Also assisting and the scene was ladder 26-16 and BLS 82-75. At this time the fire is still under investigation.

Video by Ken Van Pelt - Gloucester County Incident News - GCINCIDENTNEWS.COM

Still haven't found any information on the remodel here. Acme had announced last year that Clayton was among several stores that were scheduled for remodels. I would imagine Clayton is getting more of a refresh like the Manasquan store as opposed to a full-scale remodel. Regardless, it will be great to see the drab Neighborhood Market decor replaced with something more colorful.
